Small Newspapers Still Making A Profit

How odd that a UNC journalism professor should look at our little newspapers - often considered old school dinosaurs - as role models. Of course, we did earn a bigger profit than many of America’s daily newspapers last year - combined. More than the stately New York Times. More than most of the other recognizable big city newspapers, all of which reported staggering losses. By our standards, we had a pretty good year. Woman Dies In Wreck After Police Chase

COOLEEMEE - A police officer here realized that the driver he was attempting to stop Sunday night had become dangerous.
He was right.
Michelle Deese, 32, of NC 801, was later pronounced dead at the scene of a wreck.
Officer Brent Cranford had activated the blue light and siren on his patrol car at 11:40 p.m. in an attempt to stop a Chevrolet Cavalier that had been reported stolen - with Deese driving without a license.
As the two entered Rowan County on NC 801, the suspect car sped up and turned right onto Needmore Road.
“The in-car camera showed the pursued vehicle going left of center and passing vehicles on a double yellow line on hills and in curves,” said Police Chief Bobby West. It was traveling at an estimated 90 mph.
What happened next makes West proud of his officer.
