BICYCLIST SHOT TO DEATH
Mocksville Man Arrested Later On Monday Night

A bicyclist was shot to death Tuesday evening at Milling Road and Carolina Street in Mocksville. Tracy Fortune, 23, of Etchison Street, was pronounced dead at Davie County Hospital. A suspect was arrested for first degree murder later that night. Kevin Louis Robertson, 20, of 1017 Milling Road, was being held without privilege of bond. Authorities were busy Tuesday night gathering evidence, including search warrants for that Robertson’s house and vehicle. Mocksville Police Chief Robert Cook said the call came in at 6:42 p.m. as a person on a bicycle being hit by a vehicle. Officers were there within two

Owens, Fuller Elected To Board Of Education

After being in education for 32 years, Barbara Owens finally gets to sit in a different chair, in a county she loves.
Owens won the board of education race, taking almost 24 percent of the vote. Chad Fuller also won a spot on the board, followed by Brent Ward, William Whaley, Shannon Grimes, Cynthia Durham and Edwin Owens.
Barbara Owens has served in many capacities over three decades, including teacher’s assistant, teacher, assistant principal and last, as principal at Cornatzer Elementary School. She has seen firsthand the growth the county has experienced and has been adamant in her desire to ease the overcrowding at the high school by building another school.
“We needed another high school two or three years ago, and the need is still there,” she said. “That was a recommendation of the task force in 2003.”
Owens said if a new school isn’t built, the county will continue to lose great students, staff and faculty due to the conditions at Davie High.
When asked why she wanted to run for school board, Owens said it was to bring her “expertise to the board and to begin to plan for the future, working as a team player.”
