- Marvin Kermit Myers
Mr. Marvin Kermit Myers, 60, died Saturday, May 3, 2008 at his home. 
He was born June 10, 1947 in Davie County to the late Marvin and Helen O. Myers.  Mr. Myers was employed with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco with 28 years of service.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR and going hunting. 
Surviving: 2 sons, Jerry Myers (Gina) and Tommy Myers (Susann); 3 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Jean Dzeskewicz, Betty Ann Horn (Richard), and Pat Idol (Terry); 2 brothers, Jimmy Lee Myers (Polly) and Donald Myers; several nieces and nephews. 
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5 at Hayworth-Miller-Kinderton Chapel with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating.  Burial followed at Mocks United Methodist Church Cemetery.  The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home.

Margaret K. Myers
Mrs. Margaret Katherine Smith Myers, 88, of Rainbow Road, Advance, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born in Davie County on Dec. 3, 1919, to the late Shuford Bryan and Mary Elizabeth Gregory Smith. Mrs. Myers was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 39.5 years. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Advance and was an Elvis Presley fan. She was a member of the Elvis Fan Club Hawaii. Mrs. Myers enjoyed spending time at the coast and enjoyed fishing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Harding Myers.
Survivors: a son, Joe Myers of the home.
A cryptside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery mausoleum with the Rev. Dennis Marshall officiating.

Henry Elton Hargrove
Mr. Henry Elton Hargrove, 61, of Burlington, N.J., died April 26, 2008.
He was born in Cooleemee to the late Albert Timothy Hargrove and Birdie Mayfield Hargrove. He attended Davie County Schools, and graduated from Central Davie High School in 1964. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Livingstone College in Salisbury in 1969. Three months later, he was drafted by the armed forces, and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. Sgt. Hargrove earned a National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, and Marksman Badge before his honorable discharge in 1971. He relocated to Pennsylvania and began his career with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, where he was employed by the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Philadelphia. He did graduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia earning a master’s degree in social work. For many years, he also held a part-time position at a mental health clinic by providing intervention to residents. After more than 30 years of giving to others, he retired.
Survivors: his wife Phyllis Williams, whom he married in 1974; a son, Virgil; daughters, Marguise and Aliyah; 2 brothers, Cornelius Hargrove (Eller Wease), Ernest Hargrove (Nellie); 5 sisters, Annie Mae Taggert (Howard), Alberta McEachern, Sallie Marie Carr, Ethel Collins-Trimiar, and Beaurene Polk (William); brother-in-law, Barry Williams (Danette); nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances Hollmon.

Melvin Spry
Melvin Spry, 78, of Linwood, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 after several years of declining health.
A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 2 at Lakeview Baptist Cemetery with the Rev. David Wooten officiating.
Mr. Spry was born Oct. 27, 1929 in Davie County to Pinkston and Josie Spry. He retired from PPG in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Stevie Spry and grandson, Brian Spry, who died on April 17.
Survivors: his wife of 55 years, Betty Lou Spry of the home; a son, Mike Spry and wife Nancy of Linwood; daughters, Diane Hedrick and husband Steve of Salisbury, and Rhonda Newsome of Linwood; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

William Gorrell Inscore
The Rev. William Gorrell Inscore died on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at his residence in Hamptonville.
He was born Sept. 10, 1925, to the late William "Ferd" Sanford and Zera Victoria Pardue Inscore. A farmer, he was retired from the N.C. State Highway Division and worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 14 years. He was a member of Victory Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors: his wife, Texie; children, Rick, Dick, and Linda; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. One of 11 siblings, he is also survived by six sisters including Ruth Greene of Ridge Road, Mocksville.
His funeral was held April 30 at Gentry Family Chapel with burial in the cemetery of Victory Chapel.

Mary Lee Pettiford
Mary Lee Pettiford, 71, died May 4, 2008 in Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte following an extended illness.
She was born in Iredell County Oct. 21, 1936, to the late Joseph C. and Zannie Latten Scott. She graduated from Davie County Training School and attended the nursing program at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro. She enjoyed her career as a nurse assistant with RHA Home Health in Davie, Rowan and Iredell counties. She was a member of Redland Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James. F. Pettiford on April 5, 2005; 2 daughters, Zannie Rene Pettiford and Myrna Latten Scott; 6 of her siblings, Harold, George, Pearl, Catherine, Odell and Bessie Jo.
Survivors: a son, Perry (Patricia) Pettiford of Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.; 2 daughters, Avis Joann (Steve) Robinson of High Point and Tracy Pettiford of Salisbury; a brother, Edward (Alice) Scott of Mars Hill, S.C.; 3 sisters, Lucy Holman of Salisbury, Annie Wade Anderson and Maxine (June) Chambers both of Statesville; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be held May 10 at 1 p.m. at Redland Church of Christ. Minister Larry Glenn will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

- Gerald Leroy Canupp Jr.
Mr. Gerald Leroy “Kippy” Canupp Jr., 44, of Legion Hut Road, Mocksville, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Canupp was born Jan. 24, 1964, in Forsyth County. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Cooleemee. Mr. Canupp enjoyed animals, especially his dog, Raven, and playing the guitar.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother; paternal grandparents, Otis and Iona Canupp; and maternal grandparents, Willie Lee and Fannie Pepper.
Survivors: his father, Gerald Leroy Sharp (Libby) Canupp Sr. of Woodleaf; his mother, Donna Rebecca Pepper (Allen) Eddins of Tennessee; a son, Gerald Leroy Bo Canupp III of the home; a sister, Donna Katherine Faulkner of Morristown, Tenn.; a brother, Michael Franklin Canupp of Dillon, Mont.; 3 stepsisters, Rebecca Eddins of Morristown, Tenn., Tina Gray of Woodleaf and Linn Waggoner of Salisbury; 2 stepbrothers, Joe Myers of Woodleaf and Mark Myers of Mocksville; and his companion of 14 years, Katherine Gregg.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Eaton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Abernathy officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service.

Archie Lipscomb Jr.
Archie Lipscomb Jr., 47, died April 21, 2008 in Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte following a heart attack.
He was born in Yonkers, N.Y. to Archie Sr. and Mary Ann Clement Lipscomb. He lived on Pine Ridge Road in Mocksville before moving to Salisbury two years ago. He was an electrician by trade, and spent a lot of time at the Davie County Public Library where he enjoyed using the computers.
His mother preceded him in death on June 9, 2001.
Survivors: 3 brothers, several aunts and uncles, including a devoted aunt, Hannah McGee.
A memorial service was held in Salisbury on April 25 in Salisbury.

Gladys Trull Hinson
Gladys Trull Hinson, of Charleston, S.C., died Tuesday, April 22, 2008.
A former resident of Mauldin, S.C., she was a longtime member of Mauldin United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Auxiliary of the Shriners Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Hinson Sr.; and her brothers, Maurice, Homer, Harris and Kenneth Trull.
Survivors: her son, James Henry Hinson Jr. and wife Alicia; and her daughter, Anne Summers, and husband Jim. She is also survived by her brother, D.C. Trull; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at Cannon Jones Funeral Home in Simpsonville, S.C., on Friday, April 25.
A funeral service was held at Mauldin United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 26 at 11 am. Burial was in Graceland East Memorial Park.

Ernest Junior Odum
Ernest Junior Odum, 54, of Lexington, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at his home.
Born in Forsyth County on Dec. 13, 1953, he was the son of the late Alex Odum and Grace McKinnish. He was retired and was a member of Heavenly Sunlight Baptist Church.
Survivors: his wife, Peggy Taylor Odum, and a daughter, Lisa Marie Odum of the home.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Owens.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Odum was held Saturday, April 26, at 11 a.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel in Mocksville with Preacher Clyde Akers and Pastor Allen Smith officiating. Burial was in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends April 25 at the funeral home.

Gladys Trull Hinson
Gladys Trull Hinson, of Charleston, S.C., died Tuesday, April 22, 2008.

Mason James Sanders, infant son of Ashlie Sanders and James Carter, died on Thursday, April 24, 2008, a day after his birth.
Survivors, in addition to his parents: a brother, Micah Carter; maternal grandparents, Jim and Debbie Sanders; paternal grandparents, Ralph and Laura Darnell, Jimmy Carter; and many other family and friends.
A viewing was held at 3 p.m. April 29 and a graveside service followed at 3:30 p.m. at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church.

Rita Ann Hutchins Laws
Rita Ann Hutchins Laws, 55, of Oak Wind Drive, Advance, died on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at her home.
Born in Davie County on June 10, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Roger C. Hutchins and Agnes Louise Reavis Hutchins, who survives. She was a nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital and was of the Baptist faith, attending Yadkin College Baptist Church.
Her husband of 23 years, Eulas Ralph Laws, preceded her in death.
Also surviving: a son E. Shane Laws of Advance; 5 brothers, David R. (Tammy) Hutchins, Larry G. (Betty) Hutchins, Terry E. Hutchins, Kenneth D. Hutchins, and Barry L. Hutchins, all of Lexington; and a sister, Linda G. Harris of Lexington.
Mrs. Laws was also preceded in death by a son Thomas Ray Myers, a daughter, Angela Dawn Myers and 2 sisters, Violet Black and Deborah Harrison.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Laws was held April 24 at 8 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Henry Thompson officiating. Burial was at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25, at Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington.

Martin Clay Steele
Mr. Martin Clay Steele, 38, of Woodleaf, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Lexington.
Mr. Steele was born in Rowan County, April l3, 1970, to Jimmy and Catherine Tiny McIntyre Steele and was with the maintenance department of PCA in Salisbury. He was a graduate of West Rowan High School, class of l988; a horseman, enjoyed motorcycles, a member of NCHSA and hunting.
Surviving: his parents of Woodleaf; 2 sisters, Lynn Kearns of Gold Hill and Pam (Benjy) Woodward of Woodleaf; his maternal grandmother, Reba McIntyre of Woodleaf; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Liberty United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Roberts officiating. The family received friends and relatives at the church Tuesday from l p.m. until the hour of the service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

- Dorsey Ralph Sampson
Mr. Dorsey Ralph Sampson, 69, of Duke Whittaker Road, Mocksville, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at Davie County Hospital.
He was born April 9, 1939, in Kanawha County, W.Va. to the late Ernest D. and Velma Pearle Roberts Sampson. Mr. Sampson was retired from Thompson-Crown Wood Products and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Sampson enjoyed bowling, gardening and fishing; but he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by 2 infant sons; 2 sisters, Betty Gray White and Vada Ernestine Sampson; and a brother, Donald Ray Sampson.
Survivors: his wife of 48 years, Carol Hedrick Sampson, of the home; 2 daughters, Tammy Lynn Sampson of the home and Penny (Charles) Childress of Mocksville; 3 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Irene Nutter of Arizona, Cleora Mae (Jeffrey) Marshall of Ohio and Pauline Marie (George) Williams of Kentucky; a brother, Robert Lee (Karen) Sampson of West Virgina; and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Childress officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Edd Sanford Walker
Edd Sanford Walker, 84, of Mocksville, died Sunday April 20, 2008 at Davie County Hospital.
He was born in Davie County on March 7, 1924 to the late Eddie Green and Lula Tutterow Walker. He was a member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason at Farmington Masonic Lodge 265, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a charter member of the William R. Davie Fire Department, the North Davie Ruritan Club, Piedmont Antique Power Association, and enjoyed participating in each until his health declined. He was the owner/operator of Edd S. Walker and Son Grading and Clearing for more than 50 years and enjoyed going to work every day. He also enjoyed going to the mountains and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Walker was also preceded in dearth by his brothers, James, Sam, and Johnny Walker, his sisters, Mildred Latham, Ailence Cartner, Pauline Davis, and Janie Koontz.
Survivors: his wife of 62 years, Ruth Walker; sons, Edwin (Sue) Walker, Steve (Melanie) Walker, and daughter, Melissa Brown, all of Mocksville; a brother, Jack (Doris) Walker, sisters Betty Grissom and Gail (Jimmy) Kelly, all of Mocksville, Pearl (Don) Poindexter of Courtney, and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church Monday evening, with funeral services immediately following. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 22 at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastors Jim Sanders, George Burton, and David Gilberth.

Larry Lee Willard Sr.
Larry Lee Willard, Sr., 59, of US 64 West, Mocksville, died on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born in Stokes County on May 21, 1948, he was the son of the late Monroe Willard and Beatrice Cain Willard, who survives. He was employed by Hugh Pfaff Poultry and was of the Baptist faith.
Also surviving: 6 sons, Larry L. Willard Jr., Chad A. Willard and Zach M. Tuttle, all of Mocksville, Tony Willard of Pinnacle, Marty Willard of Lewisville and David Willard of Raleigh; 2 daughters, Lea Angela (Gene) Wilkens of Advance and Sharon Crissman of Pinnacle; 2 brothers, Junior Willard of East Bend and Terry Willard of Pinnacle; 2 sisters, Ann Phillips of Advance and Vickie Lynch of Pilot Mountain; and 2 grandchildren.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Willard was held Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with Pastors Dan Salmon and Robbie Sizemore officiating. Entombment was in the Myers Family Mausoleum at Lake Myers. The family received friends Thursday, April 17, from 6-8- p.m. at the funeral home.

S. Robert Clayton Turner
S. Robert Clayton Turner, 59, died April 17 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born in Iredell County, son of the late Clayton and Magnolia Turner Cockerham. His early life was spent in New York, and he returned to North Carolina and made his home in Winston-Salem where he worked for Sara Lee Corp.
Survivors: his wife, Hymiria J. Turner of the home; 2 sons, Sharif (Audi) Murrar and Larry Johnson of Winston-Salem; 5 sisters, Linda (Rick) Dalton, and Denise (Samuel) Davis both of Winston-Salem, Nora Dalton, Kathy Turner and Joyce Dalton, all of Bronx, N.Y.; 6 grandchildren; several relatives, including cousins in Davie County.
Funeral service will be Friday, April 25 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home. Bishop Terry Dalton will officiate and burial will follow in Piney Grove AME Zion Church Cemetery in Iredell County. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

- Nina Ethel Anderson
Ms. Nina Ethel Anderson, 90, of Main Church Road, Mocksville, died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born June 10, 1917, in Davie County to the late Jack and Martha Ethel Reavis Anderson. Ms. Anderson was retired from Dixie Furniture after 15 years. She was a member of Gospel Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Joyner; and 4 brothers, Lawrence, Albert, Odell and Grover Anderson.
Survivors: a daughter, Betty (Reece) Hoover of Denton; 2 sons, Eugene (Mary) Anderson of Lexington and James (Helen) Anderson of Mocksville; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Tobitha (Deitz) Danner of Mocksville; and a brother, C. M. (Mary) Anderson of Mocksville.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Hobson officiating. Burial followed in Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, April 15, at the funeral home.

Billy George Allen
Billy George Allen, 69, of Wyo Road, died at his home Thursday, April 10, 2008.
Born in Davie County Nov. 29, 1938, he was the son of the late Else Gray and Pansy Seats Allen. He was retired from Unifi and was a Baptist, attending Farmington Baptist Church.
Survivors: his wife, Patricia Gregory Allen; 3 sons, Barry (Billie) Allen, W. Nathan (Alisa) Allen, Joey N. Allen, all of Mocksville; 3 stepsons, Timothy McCollum and Jonathan Sizemore of Hamptonville and Justin Allen of East Bend; a daughter, Donna Wynn Allen of Charlotte, a stepdaughter, Amanda Allen of Mocksville; 6 brothers, Elmer, Bobby and Donald Allen of Mocksville, Dean and David Allen of Winston-Salem, and Gilmer Allen of Advance; 3 sisters, Lillian Groce of Yadkinville, Brenda Childress of Mocksville, Peggy Phillips of East Bend; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Allen was Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. at the Edge-wood Baptist Church in Cooleemee with the Rev. Danny Shore officiating. Burial was in the Farmington Community Cemetery. The family received friends at Davie Funeral Service.

Vernell Ijames
Vernell “Aunt Nell” Ijames, 96. died on Monday, April 7, 2008 in Rowan Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Davie County July 16, 1911, a daughter of the late James and Bessie Hudson Ijames. She attended Davie County Schools, and at an early age joined Liberty AME Zion Church. She was first married to Lorenzo Maxwell, later she married James Barger, both of whom preceded her in death. In 1984 Vernell and her husband were added to Redland Church of Christ, where she attended until her health failed. She was a homemaker, and even though she had no children by birth, she was a mother to all the children in the community. A nephew, Eugene Roseboro, was raised in her home, and several other relatives were cared for by her. She was gifted to do crochet and she enjoyed growing flower gardens.
She was also preceded in death by 9 siblings.
Survivors: a sister, Berlie White of Cooleemee; a large number nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held April 11 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home. Dr. Bertha Pittman officiated and Minister Larry Glenn delivered the eulogy. Burial followed in Cooleemee at Liberty AME Zion Church Cemetery.

Bobby Gene Glass
Mr. Bobby Gene Glass, 73, of Pine Ridge Road, Cooleemee, died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born Feb. 21, 1935, in Davie County to the late Samuel Robert and Alice Garner Glass. Mr. Glass was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. He was retired from textiles after 40 years and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Glass's favorite place to hang out was the Liar Bench in Cooleemee.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Blackwood Glass; a son, Ricky Gene Glass; 5 sisters, Mae Fink, Zelma Foster, Willie Smith, Juanita Ratliff and Peggy Seamon; and a brother, Noel Glass.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at Eaton Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Legion Memorial Park in Cooleemee. The family was to receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the funeral home.

Polly Ann Martin
Polly Ann Martin, 88, of died April 11, 2008 at Willow Brook Nursing Home in Yadkinville.
She was a native of Yadkin County, daughter of the late Virgil and Juanita Cuthrell Harding. She was a member of Tabernacle United Church of Christ, where the funeral service was held April 16 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Marvin Harper officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors: a son, Thomas Martin of Mocksville; a daughter, Sue (Charles) Woodruff of Yadkinville; a brother Odell (Camille) Harding of Yadkinville; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Nellie Ruth Johnson
Mrs. Nellie Ruth Goodin Johnson, known as Ruth, 75, of E. Memorial Hwy. Harmony, died Monday April 14, 2007 at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Born in Iredell County on Nov. 12, 1932, she was a daughter of the late John L. Goodin and Jettie Mae Tharpe Goodin. Her husband, Mr. Arthur Curtis Johnson, preceded her in death in 1966. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Cathy T. Campbell.
Survivors: 5 sons, Arthur Dale Johnson and wife Judy, Joel Kent Johnson and Tony Lewis Johnson, all of Harmony, Marcus Gray Johnson and wife Susan of Olin and Randy E. Johnson and wife Kathy of Statesville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Mrs. Johnson's life will be conducted at 2 p.m.. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Glen Belcher and Randy Goodin officiating. She will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Jody, Jamie, Bryan, Bray, Sammy and Danny Johnson and Jonathan Campbell. The family was to receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reavis Funeral Home Of Harmony.

Carl Patterson Cartner
Mr. Carl Patterson Cartner, 73, of Statesville, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Born in Davie County on Oct. 2, 1934, he was a son of the late Gradie William Cartner and Cordie Walker Cartner. Mr. Cartner served in the National Guard and was a retired route superintendent for Sunbeam Bakery. He loved and respected his pets and enjoyed NASCAR racing, traveling, gardening and yard work.
Survivors: his wife, the former Ann Lowtharpe whom he married on Dec. 24, 1954; a brother, Lawrence Cartner and wife Betty of Mocksville; a sister-in-law, Verla Cartner of Mocksville; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Lowtharpe and wife Betty of Statesville; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services celebrating Mr. Cartner's life were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14 at Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. D avid Childers officiating. Pallbearers were nephews: Chris and Kelly Overcash, Louie and Latney Lowtharpe, Andy Rash and Todd Bowers. Burial followed in Iredell Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Sunday evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.

Robert Maffit McAllister
Robert Maffit McAllister of Galax, Va. died on Tuesday morning, April 8, 2008 after a long illness .
Born at Rosedale in Alleghany County, Va., on April 11, 1924, to the late Hugh Maffitt and Lillian Brubeck McAllister, he grew up in Covington, Va., served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during the second World War, and worked as a certified public accountant.
Survivors: Gladys, his wife of 56 years; sons, Charles and wife Jane of Mocksville, and Tom and wife Kathy of Conover; daughter-in-law Debbie of Charlotte; sister, Harriet and husband Jim Loving of Richmond, Va.; and 4 grandchildren.
A son, Bobby, preceded him in death.
The Galax Presbyterian Church was host to a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12.

Mary E. Jacobs Murphy,
James Calvin Murphy
Mary Elizabeth Jacobs Murphy, 89, of Durham, died on Sunday, April 6, 2008.
Born in Davie County on April 9, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charlie W. and Ellen Irene Seamon Jacobs. Her stepmother was the late Sadie H. Jacobs.
James Calvin Murphy, 90, died on Sept. 30, 2000. He was born in Davie County on June 1, 1910, the son of Mattie Bell Dyson.
Survivors: a daughter, Rebecca Murphy; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. In addition Mrs. Jacobs is survived by a sister, Margaret Jacobs of Cooleemee, 2 brothers, David B. (Glenda) Jacobs of China Grove and Carl Jake (Doris) Jacobs of Mocksville.
A graveside inurnment service to celebrate the life of the Murphys will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. 2008, at Legion Memorial Park in Cooleemee with Pastor John Groff officiating.
