- Gary Edwards
Gary “Cotton” Edwards, 61, of Florence, S.C. died Monday, May 25, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Davie County on April 28, 1948, son of Charley Mae Ratledge Edwards of Harmony and the late James Hugh Edwards. He was general manager of Manheim Darlington, formerly general manager of Manheim Statesville. On Nov. 9, 2002, he married Pamela Martin, who survives of the home.
He was also preceded in death by brothers James Edwards Jr. and Donald Edwards, and sisters Margaret Edwards Wiles and Betty Edwards Brown.
Also surviving: his son, Ryan Edwards (Stephanie) of Atlanta, Ga.; stepson Josh Connolly (Kendra) of Cary; stepdaughter Nichole Andersen (Chad) of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tatum Edwards, Jaysen Andersen and Sydney Andersen; brothers and sisters, Lester Edwards (Maxine) and Shirley Edwards, all of Harmony, and Sandra Dyson (Terry) of Mocksville.
Services celebrating his life are scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 2 p.m. in the Ernest M. Troutman Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Bruce Hobson and David Cunha officiating. Burial will follow in New Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Reavis Funeral Home, Harmony.

William R. Wooten
Mr. William Raymond Wooten, 82, of Grey Street, Mocksville, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at WFU Baptist Medical Center.
He was born on March 28, 1927, in Harden County, Iowa, to the late Wesley Raymond and Mary Jane McCormick Wooten. Mr. Wooten was a member of Mocksville First Baptist Church where he was deacon. He was a veteran of the US Navy, having served in World War II. He was retired with the NC Highway Patrol after 38 years. Mr. Wooten was elected and served as sheriff of Davie County. He was a member of the Mocksville VFW and the NC Retired Peace Officers Association. He became a Mason in 1962 and was a member of the Mocksville Lodge 134, Past Master of the Clyde Lodge 453, and a 32nd degree Mason in the valley of Winston-Salem. Mr. Wooten enjoyed golfing, gardening, taking trips, spending time with family and telling big tales.
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ruth Maynard and Pauline Wooten; 5 brothers, George, John, Howard, Paul and James.
Survivors: his wife of 58 years, Lucille Mann Wooten of the home; 2 sons, Larry (Lydia) Wooten and Garry (Sheila) Wooten, both of Canton; 6 grandchildren, Brent (Stacy) Wooten, Scott (Amy) Owens, Tim (Danielle) Owens, Julie (Shannon) Smith, Jamie (Anthony) Seagraves and Heather Wooten; 11 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Alan, Katie, Bethany, Madisen, Gavin, Jack, Avery, Elizabeth, Garrett and Amelia; a brother, Richard (Jean) Wooten of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 25, at First Baptist Church in Mocksville with Dr. Van Lankford officiating. The family received friends following the service in the church. A funeral service was also conducted at 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, at First Baptist Church in Clyde with Dr. Van Lankford and Pastor Heath Davis officiating. Burial followed in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

Sylvia Eva Smith
Miss Sylvia Eva Smith, 82, Pudding Ridge Road, Mocksville, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
She was born May 25, 1926, in Davie County to the late Byrd Q. and Mary Lapish Smith. Miss Smith was a Christian who loved music and was a member of Eatons Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing, sewing quilt tops and doing embroidery.
She was also preceded in death by 7 sisters and 7 brothers.
A funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 24, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating. Burial followed in Eatons Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at Eaton Funeral Home one hour before the service.

Mae Smith Walker
Mrs. Mae Smith Walker, 91, of St. Matthews Road, Mocksville, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born April 20, 1918, in Davie County to the late Arthur Lorenzy and Ruth Byerly Smith. Mrs. Walker was a life member of Salem United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. She was a graduate of the Cool Springs High School class of 1936.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Lemuel Walker in 1977; and a sister, Viola Daywalt in 1997.
Survivors: a daughter, Sara (Bud) Wallace of Mocksville; a brother-in-law, John Walker of Mocksville; special friend, Hannah McGee of Mocksville; 3 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald and Pastor Rodney Barker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the church following the service.

Jane Juanita Tutterow
Jane Juanita Tutterow, 88, formerly of Greenhill Road, Mocksville, died on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte.
Born in Damascus, Va., on Sept. 25, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Verbie Katherine Kessee Gates. She was a homemaker and had worked at BF Manufacturing for 25 years. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church.
Her husband of 59 years, Robert “Pete” Dwight Tutterow, preceded her in death in 1998. A son, Curtis Tutterow, also preceded her in death.
Survivors: 2 sons, Robert Bob (Joanne) Tutterow of Waxhaw, and David Tutterow of Atlanta, Ga.; 2 sisters, Blanche Word of Bristol, Tenn. and Christine Synan of Augusta, Ga.; 5 grandchildren, Brad Tutterow of Waxhaw, Tracy Schoeppner of Monroe, Scott, Jason, and Brett Tutterow of Atlanta; and 7 great-grandchildren.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Tutterow was to be held on Thursday, May 28, at 1 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with her son, Bob Tutterow officiating. Burial was to be in the Center United Methodist Church cemetery. The family was to receive friends on Wednesday, May 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service.

Dr. Jack Ervin Shanks
Dr. Jack Ervin Shanks, 75, of Hickory, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Frye Regional Medical Center from cancer.
Dr. Shanks was born Jan. 27, 1934 in Wilmington, Ohio, the son of the late Carl Harmon Shanks and Edith Brown Shanks. He was a veterinarian and served in the Korean War. He worked on a cattle ranch in Vermont where he met and married Nancy Moore of Springfield, Vt. on Sept. 20, 1958. They moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he attended Ohio State University. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1964. He moved to Damascus, Md. and was a resident veterinarian for Col. E. Brooke Lee. He went into private practice years later and had a small animal hospital. He also had a large animal practice which included U.S. Naval Academy’s Cattle Farm in Annapolis, Md. Dr. Shanks moved to Mocksville in 1978 and had a Hereford cattle ranch as well as practicing a large animal veterinary business. He moved to Hickory in the early 1980s where he practiced large animal vet work and ran a cattle farm on C.B. Farm Road. He was a life member of Montgomery County Fair, past president of Damascus Lions Club, member of Davie Ruritan Club, past president of Maryland Veterinary Association, board of director of American Bovine Association, a member of the North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia veterinary associations. He was a past member of Maryland and N.C. Polled Hereford Association, having served as president of both. He was a member of Catawba County Cattlemens Association. Dr. Shanks coached a 4-H judging team in Maryland, taking them to state contests with success. He was active in working with the youth in Ohio, Maryland, and North Carolina. He enjoyed loaning cattle to youth and advising them how to raise and show at local fairs and cattle shows. He considered them as “his kids”.
Survivors: his wife, Nancy Moore Shanks; a son, J.D. Shanks and wife Sarah of Etters, Pa.; daughter, Kimberly Herman and husband, Todd of Skiatook, Okla.; 4 grandchildren, David Shanks, Kasey Herman, Rob Shanks and Katie Shanks; brothers, Dr. Carl H. Shanks and wife Isabelle of Newburg, Ore. and Jerry Shanks and wife Susan of New Market, Md.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Donnelly of Springfield, Vt.; niece, Cynthia Robinson of Washington; and nephews, David Shanks of Vancouver, Wash., Bill Shanks of Friday Harbor, Wash., Mark Shanks of Maryland and Brian Donnelly of Lawton, Okla.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m., Friday, May 22 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. Beth Lilly officiating. The family received friends following the service at the church.

Betty Bailey Glass
Mrs. Betty Bailey Glass, 71, of Merrells Lake Road, Mocksville, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was born Sept. 1, 1937, in Davie County to the late Eliza Bailey Cope. Mrs. Glass was an antique dealer and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Alton David Kit Beauchamp in 1961, and her second husband, Eugene Ronald Glass in 1999.
Survivors: a daughter, Theresa B. Idol of Advance; 3 sons, Alton Eugene Beauchamp of Lexington, Joe Bailey Beauchamp of Mississippi and Christopher Lee Glass of Mocksville; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Bailey.

Robert Warren Griffin
Mr. Robert Warren Griffin, 69, of Bermuda Run, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at his home.
He was born Sept. 7, 1939 in Lee County to Grover L. and Mary Britt Griffin. Mr. Griffin grew up in Fayetteville, served in the U.S. Air Force and attended Methodist University. Mr. Griffin was a manufacturers representative for 35 years. He was active in his community and church and served as town councilman of Bermuda Run. He never met a stranger and enjoyed friends and business associates. He was a golfer, loved sports, and enjoyed coaching his sons and being involved in their lives. Mr. Griffin loved and lived for his family, friends, church and country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Neal Griffin.
Surviving: his wife of 44 years, Judy Monterose Griffin of the home; 3 sons, Rob of Advance, Glen and his wife Doris of Fuquay-Varina and Sam of Waynesville; 2 grandsons, Dominick and Anthony; his stepmother, Elizabeth Griffin of Fayetteville; a sister, Margaret Fischer and husband Jack of Swampscott, Mass; 3 brothers, Grover Griffin Jr. and Dr. Stan Griffin and wife Faye, all of Fayetteville and Johnny Griffin and wife Faye of Louisburg; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Griffin; his mother-in-law, Ruby Monterose of Fayetteville; sisters-in-law, Janet Monterose of Wilmington and Sandra Gravely and husband Dr. Archer Gravely of Asheville; 15 nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, May 22 at Clemmons Moravian Church with the Rev. Q. Ray Burke officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. The family received friends following the service.

W.C. Phipps Sr.
Mr. Walter Clifton Phipps Sr., 82, of Greenwood Avenue, Mocksville, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Phipps was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Alleghany County to the late Charlie Wayne and Annie Ruth Wooten Phipps. He attended Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Phipps was retired from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and the Davie County Sheriffs Office. He was co-owner/operator of Center Exxon in Mocksville. In recent years, he and his wife were owner/operators of Phipps Sewing Center & Farm Toys on Salisbury Street. He was a charter member of the Piedmont Antique Power Association and of the Davie County Law Enforcement Association.
Survivors: his wife of 64 years, Wilma Ruth Hampton Phipps of the home; 3 daughters, Judy P. (Bill) Lawrence of Scranton, Joyce P. (Joe) Scott of Mocksville and Jayne R. (Randy) Phipps-Boger of Glade Valley; 3 sons, Jimmy (Sonia) Phipps, Walter (Susan) Phipps Jr. and Jeffrey K. Phipps, all of Mocksville; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; 3 sisters, Nell P. (Lyle) Cox of Colfax, Dorothy P. (Dwayne) Jones of Scottville and Doris P. Murphy of Elkin; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Saturday, May 23, at Eaton Funeral Home. A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Sparta. The family received friends at the church on Sunday.

Catherine Border
Catherine “Katie” Border, 75, a long-time resident of Mocksville, died Tuesday morning, April 28, 2009 at St. John’s Mercy Villa in Springfield, Mo., from complications associated with dementia.
She was born in Manila, the Philippines on Sept. 29, 1933 to Mildred “Milly” O’Donnell Fikes and Orange James Fikes, both deceased. She graduated from Mamaroneck ( N.Y.) High School and moved to San Francisco, where she volunteered for the USO and Red Cross. She married Harold “Hal” Border, USMC. They lived in seven states and 10 cities. She was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Mocksville and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was a reader and few were able to beat her at Scrabble. She was interested in the struggles of everyday people and the natural world. She never stopped learning or her love of travel. Taking the scenic route was one of her trademarks.
She was also preceded in death by her husband; and 2 daughters, Katherine and Kathleen.
Survivors: 3 daughters, Mary Border Ellison of Springfield, Ginny Border Delaney of Sherrill, N.Y. and Trish “Patty” Border Talley of Winston-Salem; 6 grandchildren, Mandy Reece, James Anderson, Joseph Anderson, Michel Ann Ellison, Jeremy Ellison and Johanna Delaney; 3 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Reece, Jake and Conner Anderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial services were scheduled for noon Thursday May 28 at St. Francis Catholic Church.
