Obits: Week of Oct. 11, 2007

- Ervin Willis Stone
Mr. Ervin Willis Stone, 79, of Mocksville died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Mr. Stone was born in Alexandria, Va. to the late Willis Jackson and Cora Lee Kennedy Stone. He served his country in the Navy and CIA throughout the Cold War. Mr. Stone was stationed throughout the world in many Cold War hot spots. After retiring from the CIA, he became an employee of the American Red Cross as the Service to Veterans representative. Mr. Stone was a man of many trades not only participating in the military and CIA but found time to operate a farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by a brother Everett F. Murphy.
Survivors: his wife of 52 years, Ruth Stone; 5 children, Mark Stone and wife Scarlet of Winston-Salem, Alison Fields and husband Joel of Tucker, Ga., Joanne of Hillsdale, Melissa Taylor and husband David of Clemmons, and Jack Stone and wife (Johnna) of Mocksville; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Juanita McConnell.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Thomasville City Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Davis officiating.

Effie Wooten Sheets
Mrs. Effie Wooten Sheets, 85, of Clemmons died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at her home. 
She was born April 29, 1922 in Iredell County to William Cyrus and Attrie York Wooten. Mrs. Sheets was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church for the past 50 years and never missed an opportunity to witness to people and share her love of Jesus.  She served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and touched many lives by taking food, cards, money and flowers to nursing homes and shut-ins. She loved her cows and loved working in her flowers. 
Mrs. Sheets was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Pete Sheets Sr.; 5 sisters, Gertie Hepler, Thelma Mullis, Verdie Jenkins, Ethel Blackwell and  Hazel Ladd; 5 brothers, Wardie, Otho, Denver, Burean and Parks Wooten and a great-grandchild, Gavin Lynn Sheets.  
Survivors: a daughter, Cindy Holder and husband Charlie of Clemmons; 3 sons, Richard Sheets and wife Pat of Yadkinville, Garland Sheets Jr. and Gary Sheets and wife Sherry, all of Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Wooten of Lake Norman. 
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Union Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Justin Jones officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.  The family was to receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.

Clarence Wayne Link
Mr. Clarence “Wormy” Wayne Link, 59, of Gloucester Lane, Mocksville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Mr. Link was born Oct. 12, 1947, in Davie County to the late William Levi and Marie Smith Link. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Link was employed by Southern Industrial of Raleigh as a pipe installation supervisor. He attended Welcome Four Square Church. Mr. Link enjoyed spending time with Brady, Holly and Caleb.
He was also preceded in death by a niece, Debbie Link.
Survivors: his wife, Carolyn Cotton Lipe Link of the home; 2 sons, Brady Wayne (Angie) Link and Rocky Marcell Link, all of Mocksville; 4 sisters, Annette (Bill) Bisonette of Florida, Linda (Andy) Jackson of Oklahoma, Delores (Allen) Clontz and Libby (Roger) McClain, all of Mocksville; 6 brothers, Billy Ray (Pat) Link of Cooleemee, Richard (Mary Ann) Link of Mocksville, Ronnie Link and Kenny Link, both of Cooleemee, Dennis (Marty) Link of Mocksville and Michael Link of Cooleemee; 3 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law, Rachel Lipe of Troutman.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

James Carl Hellard
Mr. James Carl “Brub” Hellard, 81 of Salisbury died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 at his home.
Born Dec. 7, 1925 in Davie County, he was the son of the late Carl James and Ellen Ridenhour Hellard. He was educated in the Davie County schools and was employed for Carolina Tire for 30 years before retiring. Mr. Hellard was a member of Gays Chapel United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Messick Hellard on Jan. 21, 1998 and his sister, Colleen McDaniel and 2 brothers, J.D. Hellard and Raymond Hellard.
Survivors: his sister, Dottie Brackens and husband Gene of Salisbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Rowan Memorial Park with the Rev. Tony Jordan, minister of Gays Chapel United Methodist Church officiating.
Memorials: Gays Chapel Methodist, 5545 Woodleaf Road, Salisbury, 28147; or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Emma Rachel Long
Funeral Services for Ms. Emma Rachel Long, 93, were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at the First Baptist Church, Statesville.

Bettyanne Lewis
Miss Bettyanne Lewis, 65, of Summit Drive, Mocksville, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Miss Lewis was born Nov. 26, 1941, in Kings County, N.Y., to the late William Spencer Jr. and Jeanie Drain Lewis. She was vice president of international shipping in New York. Miss Lewis enjoyed traveling, was a great artist and had many close, dear friends.
Survivors: a sister, Jean (Jimmy) Gleason of Mocksville; 2 brothers, James Lewis of Brooklyn, N.Y. and William (Sandra) Lewis III of Durham; a niece; and 9 nephews.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Rose Cemetery conducted by Mr. Jimmy Gleason Jr. The family received friends Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Eaton Funeral Home.

William C. Myers Sr.
Mr. William Courtney Myers Sr., 89, of Southwood Drive, Mocksville, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at his home.
Mr. Myers was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late William Rebman and Virginia Gertrude Pearson Myers. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Department of Naval Supply (NAVSUP) in 1980 after 30 years. Mr. Myers was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion in Sellersville, Pa. He enjoyed planting trees and gardening.
Survivors: his wife of 64 years, Margaret Alicia Ahern Myers of the home; 4 children, Margaret Lee Myers of New London, Conn., Virginia Courtney (Warren) Kerlin, William Courtney Myers Jr., Robert Bruce Myers, all of Mocksville; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Betty Virginia Absher
Betty Virginia Absher, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2007 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
She was born in Thomas, W.Va. to the late Bessie and Henry Shupp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Absher, in 1983.
Survivors: 3 children, Libby Absher of Mocksville, Jim Absher of Yadkinville and Karen Absher of Forsyth County; 5 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are being handled by Hinkley’s Funeral Home in Davis, W.Va.

Eric Trent Hedrick
Mr. Eric Trent Hedrick, 34, of High Point, died Monday morning, Oct. 1, 2007.
He was born June 21, 1973 in Guilford County a son of Gary Phillip Hedrick and Pamela Hilton Hedrick. He was a 1991 graduate of Southern Guilford High School. He was employed with Columbian Coffee Co. and his route included Davie County. He was a coach with the Creekside Recreation Center in Archdale and also coached the Carolina Angels, USSSA & AAU team. He attended Solid Rock Freewill Baptist Church in Thomasville. On June 26, 1993 he was married to Christy Riddle, who survives of the home.
Also surviving: a daughter, Kaitlyn Hedrick of the home; a son, Ryan Hedrick of the home; his parents, Gary and Pam Hedrick of High Point; brothers, Kevin Hedrick and wife Shara of Lexington and Jerad Hedrick of High Point; grandmothers, Mary Ann Hilton of Thomasville, Nellie Bean of Mayodan; great-grandmother, Maude Hedrick of Silver Valley Community of Lexington; 4 nieces and 2 nephews; mother-in-law, Joyce Wagoner of High Point; and sister-in-law, Michelle Wagoner of Utah.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Anthony Hancock officiating. Burial followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family received friends at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville Wednesday .

Frances Johnston Allen
Mrs. Frances Johnston Allen, 82, of US 64 East, Mocksville, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a seven month battle with cancer.
Mrs. Allen was born June 6, 1925, in Iredell County to the late Zebulon Vance and Katie Hoover Johnston. She was last employed by Davie County Hospital CAP program as a certified nursing assistant for 20 years. Mrs. Allen had to resign in March due to her illness. She was a member of Mocks United Methodist Church in Advance where she attended regularly until the decline of her health.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Walter Cleveland Allen Jr.; 6 brothers; and 4 sisters.
Survivors: 2 sons, Walter C (Leanne) Allen III and Joe Stanley (Glynda) Allen, all of Mocksville; 4 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Mocks United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Jonathan Brake and the Marion Faulk officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Friday, Oct. 5, at Eaton Funeral Home.
