- Joseph Turner Greene Jr.
Joseph Turner Greene Jr., 80, died on April 17, 2009.
He was born June 20, 1928, and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Turner Greene Sr., and Mervin Blevins Greene; and his twin brother.
Survivors: his wife, Naomi Lewis Greene; sisters, Ruth Lee Austin and husband David; Clara Disher; a niece; a great-niece; and his pet companion, Susan.
He graduated from Hanes High School; was in the Navy in World War II; a member of the Farmington Masonic Lodge; a member of the Winston-Salem Jaycees and their man of the year in 1963; and graduated from the Winston-Salem Barber College, which was his life-time profession. He donated his time to organizations including Goodwill Industries, Amos Cottage, Jaycees Boys Home of NC, The United Fund, NC Eye Bank, Piedmont Bowl, Boy Scouts, Baptist Home, Forsyth TB, Cancer Crusade, Yoder Home, Master Barber Association, and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. He was past president of the Winston-Salem Jr Chamber of Commerce.
His memorial service was held Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Farmington Baptist Church, Mocksville with Pastor Phillip Brande officiating. The family received friends following the service in the fellowship hall. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Edna Cope Hendrix
Mrs. Edna Cope Hendrix, 88, of US 64 East, Mocksville, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born April 6, 1921, in Davie County to the late Wiley B. Cope Sr. and Effie Hendrix Cope. Mrs. Hendrix was a faithful member of Fork Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years in the Junior Department. She was a member of the Davie County Hospital Auxiliary for several years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Charlie David Hendrix on Dec. 9, 2006; an infant daughter, Nancy Carol Hendrix; 3 sisters, Vasta Cope, Sadie Burton and Mozelle Gillean; and 2 brothers, Dennie Cope and Wiley B. Cope Jr.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Connie (Dallas) Jones and Shirey (Bud) Hauser, all of Mocksville; 4 grandchildren, Debbie Cranfill of Advance, Karen Wagoner, Michael (Heidi) Jones, and Barry (Stacy) Hauser, all of Mocksville; 7 great-grandchildren, Brooke Wagoner, David Wagoner, Dylan Cranfill, Colby Cranfill, Chandler Jones, Travis Jones and Cade Jones; and a sister, Jessie (Bill) Gobble of Mocksville.
A funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Fork Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Garrett officiating. The body was placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends April 16 at Eaton Funeral Home.

Kenneth E. Whitaker
Mr. Kenneth “Ken” Eugene Whitaker, 65, of Yadkinville, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville.
He was born in Davie County on July 31, 1943, to the late Lattie Lafayette and Naomi Reavis Whitaker, and was a supervisor with Century Reproduction in East Bend. Mr. Whitaker had been employed with North Davidson in Davidson County. He enjoyed his work as a hobby. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and traveling.
He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Delmus and Hubert Whitaker and an infant sister, Louetta Whitaker.
Survivors: 4 daughters, Cindy Wyatt (Keith) of Yadkinville, Lisa Macemore of Wilmington, Kay Hardison and Angela Brown (Kevin) all of Yadkinville; 2 sons, Michael Eugene Creed and Stephen Creed (Robin); a stepson, Dalton Creed and their mother, Christine Whitaker, all of East Bend; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Debbie Walser (Ralph), Ida Mae Cranfill (Fred); a brother, Harvey Whitaker, all of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville.

Kandi L. Jones
Kandi L. Jones, 24, of Statesville, died on Monday, April 14, 2009, at her home.
Born in Rowan County on Sept. 20, 1984, she was the daughter of Terry Lynn Kimmer of Mocksville and the late Kimberly Cohen Patterson, who preceded her in death on April 13, 2009. She was of the Baptist faith and had been employed at Kimberly-Clark.
Also surviving: a sister, Kendra Nicole Kimmer of Mocksville; her grandmother, Kay Carter of Mocksville; her stepfather, Walt Patterson of Statesville; an aunt, Kathy Cohen Smith of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.
The service to celebrate her life was held Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. The family received friends on Saturday.

Cecelia Marie Boivin
Cecelia Marie (Cormier) Boivin, 96, of Clemmons Village II, died April 20, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born Dec. 31, 1912 in Lansboro, Mass., to the late William B. and Charlotte Keeler Sherman. She was married to the late Henry A. Cormier of Somers, Conn. for 22 years and the late Charles Boivin for 15 years.
She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 3 sisters, and daughters Judith Ann in 1968 and Jacqueline Marie in 2008.
Survivors: 3 sons, Bruce E. Cormier of Winston-Salem, Brian T. Cormier of Mocksville, and Gary Cormier of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; daughters-in-law, Marcia Cormier, Jeanette and Frankie Byerly and Glenna Cormier; and a son-in-law, John Larabee; 6 grandchildren, Kimberly (Darren) Crotts of Advance, Nicole (Brian) Crotts of Mocksville, Jennifer (Dave) Couture of Broadbrook, Conn., Jonathan (Annette) Larabee of S. Glastonbury, Conn., James (Joleen) Larabee of Storrs, Conn., and Melissa Cormier of Ft. Meyers; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Rd., Advance.

Alma Combs Shoaf
Alma Mae Combs Shoaf, 89, of Duke Street, Mocksville, died on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice.
Born in Wilkes County on June 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Columbus and Laura Rinda McCrary Combs. She retired from Cone Mills in 1981, where she was a re-inspector. Mrs. Shoaf was a member of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Robert Shoaf, who she married on April 23, 1937.
Survivors: 3 daughters, Geraldine (Paul) Leatherman of Woodleaf, Glenda (Robert) Barnhardt and Kathy Corriher, both of Mocksville; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Shoaf was also preceded in death by five sisters, Carrie Mayes, Pauline Pinkston, Viola Yates, Jettie Reiley, and Ruth Troutman; a brother, Sidney Everette Combs; and a grandson, Robert Lynn Leatherman.
The service to celebrate Mrs. Shoaf’s life was held Tuesday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, with the Rev. Tommy Register officiating. The family received friends prior to the funeral hour at the church. Entombment followed at Rowan Memorial Park.

Walter Ray Bennett Sr.
Walter Ray Bennett Sr., 73, of Rainbow Road, Advance, died on Tuesday, April 14, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Born in Forsyth County on April 9, 1936, he was the son of the late Grover Ray and Mattie Ellen Thacker Bennett. He was retired from Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was retired as pastor of Chapel of Gods Word, which was located behind his house.
Survivors: his wife of 55 years, Betty Yarbrough Bennett; a son, Walter Ray (Gail) Bennett Jr. of Elm City; 2 daughters, Deborah Ann (David) Bennett Steele of Cooleemee and Bobbie Jean Bennett Hendrix of Mocksville; a brother, James Franklin (Penny) Bennett; 8 grandchildren, Michelle (Tucker) Gibson, Jenny Bennett, Josh (Karen) Hendrix, Candice (Ryan) Burton, Magan (Richard) Carter, Melissa ( BJ) Kiser, James Wilkins and Will (Heather) Batts; 17 great-grandchildren, Cassie, Raheem, Danielle, Cody, Caleb, Anna, Dallas, William, Cody, Rylan, Dakota, Makenna, Tristan, Tori, Emma, Ty and baby Carter (on the way).
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Gray Bennett.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Bennett was held on Wednesday, April 22, at 1 p.m. at the Salisbury National Cemetery with his son, Pastor Walter Ray Bennett Jr. and Donald Funderburke officiating. The family received friends on Friday, April 17 at Davie Funeral Service.

Robert Martin Staley
Mr. Robert Martin “Bobby” Staley, 38, of Mocksville, died Saturday, April 18, 2009.
He was born Feb. 1, 1971, in Davie County to Larry James and Patsy Riddle Staley. Mr. Staley was a member of Hillsdale Baptist Church where he was a trumpet player in the praise band. He was a member of the Mocksville Masonic Lodge AF&AM 134. Mr. Staley was employed by the Winston Salem Police Department and was in the C-Company 1-252CAB, NC National Guard in Southern Pines where he was a 2nd Lt. Platoon Leader. He was active with the Western Carolina Marching Band. Mr. Staley had attained Boy Scouts highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Survivors: his wife, April Green Staley of the home; 2 daughters, Allison and Jill of the home; his parents of Mocksville; 2 brothers, Jimmy (Shayna) Staley and Richard (Elizabeth) Staley; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 22, at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Dale Harlan officiating. Burial followed in Blaise Baptist Church Cemetery in Mocksville, with Military Honors. The family received friends Tuesday, April 21, at Calvary Baptist Church.

William Mae Pope Pierce
Mrs. Willie Mae Pope Pierce, 89, of the Franklin community in Rowan County, died on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Mrs. Pierce was born July 25, 1919 in Rowan County to the late Garland Henry Pope and Mary Edith Harrison Pope. She attended Woodleaf School. Mrs. Pierce retired from Laguna Swimwear after 19 years of work. She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women’s Circle and Friendly Bible Class. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club.
Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Caudell Pierce on Sept. 20, 2001; a brother, Garland Henry Pope Jr.; 2 sisters, Elva Pope Crawford and Glendon Pope Penley; and a step-great-granddaughter, Isabelle Nicole Barcenas.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Ann P. McCulloh (Bill) of Salisbury, and Mary Jo P. Peacock (Gary) of Mocksville; and 3 sisters, Betty Correll of China Grove, Gene Saunders and Wilma Penley, both of Salisbury; 3 grandchildren, Roxanne Shrewsbury (Roger), Tommy Waller (Lori), and Terry Waller (Peggy); a step-grandchild; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-great grandchildren.
The family received friends Saturday, April 18 at Summersett Funeral Home. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. in Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Larry Summey conducting. Burial followed at Rowan Memorial Park.

Larry Wayne Hamilton
Larry Wayne Hamilton, 66, of Dogtrot Road, Mocksville, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born Oct. 18, 1942, in Rowan County to the late Marion Buddy and Cay Surratt Hamilton. He was a retired truck driver.
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and a brother.
Survivors: his wife of 46 years, Linda Angell Hamilton, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dottie and Ray Graham of Cleveland; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Dean Hamilton and Myra Tannehill of Salisbury and David and Diane Hamilton of Granite Quarry; mother-in-law, Edna Angell of Mocksville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gray and Barbara Angell, Nat and Vicki Angell, Nan Angell and Jimmy Blume, and Pattie Angell; 7 grandchildren, Christopher Graham, Kenny Graham, Kandi and Michael Legault, Kelli Graham, Daniel Hamilton, Heather Hamilton and Mikayla Hamilton; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with his Pastor Will Pryor officiating. Burial followed at Freedom Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Friday, April 17, at Eaton Funeral Home.
