Helen Wagner Ratledge
Helen Wagner Ratledge, 85, of Woodleaf died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Genesis Healthcare of Salisbury.
Born April 21, 1923 in Davie County, she was the daughter of the late James Savannah and Stella Wofford Wagner. She was educated in the Davie County schools. Mrs. Ratledge was employed for Western Electric, Winston-Salem earlier in her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Ratledge will be remembered for her kind spirit and compassion, and was active in her church, community and her children’s education.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Ward Ratledge on Feb. 15, 2007, her sisters, Dorothy McDaniel and Ruby James, and brothers, George, Pete, Buddy and James Wagner.
Survivors: her daughters, Patricia Ratledge Duff and husband Wayne of High Point, Susan Ratledge Thomas and husband Jim of Charlotte; son George Wesley Ratledge of Salisbury; sisters, Mae Bailey of Omaha, Neb., Barbara Ijames and Geraldine Hendrix, both of Mocksville; and grandchildren, Matthew Duff, Sally Duff Nicol, Stella Thomas and Susannah Thomas.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Malcolm M. Bullock officiating. Burial followed at Rowan Memorial Park. The family received friends Tuesday at Summersett Funeral Home. A gathering for family and friends followed the services Tuesday at the family home in Woodleaf.

Robert Gray Smith Jr.
Mr. Robert “Bobby” Gray Smith Jr., 48, of Advance died Thursday, March 25, 2009 at his home.
He was born Oct. 4, 1960 in Forsyth County to Robert Gray Smith Sr. and Betty Kimmons Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Ed Smith.
Surviving: his mother; 4 sisters, Teresa Smith, Marsha Smith, Linda Smith Smith and Vanessa Smith Taylor; and a special niece, Amber Taylor.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Jonathan Hill and Tim Dunn officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lucille Caudell Howard
Mrs. Lucille Caudell Howard, 92, of Reston, Va., formerly of Mocksville, died Thursday, March 26, 2009.
She was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Davie County to the late Thomas I. and Jesse Hendrix Caudell. Mrs. Howard was a member of First Baptist Church. She was retired from Caudell Lumber in Mocksville, where she was bookkeeper for many years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel M. Howard; and 2 brothers, Walter and Jeff Caudell.
Survivors: a daughter, Jane (Robert Schoeplein) Howard of Reston, Va.; a sister, Mae Caudell Howard of Reston, Va.; and several nieces.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Van Lankford officiating. Burial followed in Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Dorothy D. Moore
Dorothy D. Moore, 88, of Mocksville, died on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Autumn Care Of Mocksville after several months of declining health.
Mrs. Moore was born in Swain County on Jan. 1, 1921. She was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Nola Slagle Dehart. She was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church and had read her Bible through more than 20 times. Mrs. Moore was author of a book, Dorothy Moore’s Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking, which taught skills she had learned while living in Okinawa with her husband, who retired from the Army. While living 32 years at Kitty Hawk, she was active in church, Bible studies and was a gardener.
Survivors: her husband of 48 years, Paul A. Moore of the home; 2 daughters, Linda (James T.) Pullen of Falls Church, Va., Faye (Allen James) Hutchins of Mocksville; a stepson, Timothy P. Moore of Cookeville, Tenn.; a sister, Della D. Dudis of Vandalia, Ohio; a brother, D.C. Dehart of Midway; 4 grandchildren, Denise (Bill) McConnell of Marbury, Md., Patricia P. Henry of Winchester, Va., Wendy (Tim) King and Jay (Lori) Hutchins, both of Mocksville; 3 great-grandchildren, Daniel and Emma King of Mocksville and Billy McConnell of Marbury.
She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Esther S. Lawter, Shirley D. Lindsay, Marie S. Motsinger, and 7 brothers, William Gudger Dehart, Everette J. Dehart, Norman B. Dehart, Arthur Lee Dehart, Rae Dehart, Wayne Dehart and Floyd Dehart.
The service to celebrate Mrs. Moore’s life was held on Friday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at Green Meadows Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Waters officiating. She lied in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends March 26 at Davie Funeral Service.

Wilma Marie Miller
Mrs. Wilma Marie Miller, 90, of Farmington, died on Saturday, March 28, 2009.
She was born Wilma Krogman in Humboldt, Neb. She was an active member of Farmington United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the Arabian horse business and traveling with the Friendship Force.
Survivors: her husband of 63 years, Clifton Jones Miller; 3 children, Roger A. Miller and wife Ellen of Farmington, Dan K. Miller and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem, and Krista M. Helton and husband, Joe of Franklin, Tenn.; 7 grandchildren, Jeff Miller, Allison Fender, Ben Miller, Wesley Miller, Grayson Miller, all of Farmington and Samantha Helton and J.J. Helton of Franklin; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at Farmington United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Tookey. Burial followed in Farmington Community Cemetery. The family received friends following the service at the church.

Clara Mae Honeycutt
Mrs. Clara Mae Seamon Honeycutt, 69, of Lexington, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Honeycutt was born April 9, 1939, in Davidson County, to the late Pearl Hancock and James Fred Garner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Milton Ham Seamon; 2 sisters, Jacqueline Tysinger and Barbara Sue Wiley; and 2 brothers, Bobby James Garner and infant, Willie Garner.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Kaye (Clayton) Seamon of Southmont and Jane Allen of Denton; a grandson; 6 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; 3 sisters, Mary Garner, Wilma (Fred) Gammons, all of Denton and Hazel Yates of Southmont.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mocksville with the Rev. Allen Smith officiating.

Ralph Lewis Hernsmith
Ralph Lewis Hernsmith, 84, of Clemmons, died on March 25, 2009 from cancer.
He was born June 20, 1924. A decorated veteran of World War II, he stormed the beaches of Normandy and served with the 90th Infantry throughout the European Theater.
Survivors: his wife of 60 years, Edna Atwood Hernsmith; his children, Rebecca Hernsmith Lee (Rick), Patricia Hernsmith Joyce (Mike), and Nancye Hernsmith Bright (Jeff); his grandchildren, Wendy Joyce Terry (Carlton), Jenny Lynn Joyce, Mindy Leanne Joyce (Jarrod), Adam L. Coleman and Lauren L. Coleman; and his great-grandchildren, Charles Terry, Eden Joyce and Erika Terry.

Lois M. Smith
Lois M. Smith, 84, of Norfolk, Va., died on March 18, 2009 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Charles Flake and Betty Ligeon Milholen of Cooleemee. A Cooleemee native, she was a graduate of Cooleemee High School and attended Draughn Business College in Greensboro. She moved to Washington, D.C., after graduation, where she worked for the government. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Westminster Chapter 99.
Survivors: her husband of 58 years, Lynn R. Smith; 4 daughters, Linda Lopez of New Boston, N.H., Betty Slaton of Loudon, Tenn., Lois Philipoom of Gloucester, Va., and Leslie Crowder of Chesapeake, Va.; 4 grandchildren, Sabrina, Philip, Andrea and John IV; a brother, David E. Milholen of Alabama; and a sister, Sarah M. Kluttz of Salisbury.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Milholen of Richmond, Va. and a sister, Gladys M. Lowder of Cooleemee.
A funeral service was conducted March 21 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating.
Thomas Clement Smith
Thomas Clement Smith, 85, of Cooleemee, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at his home as he desired under Hospice care.
He was born June 17, 1923, in Cooleemee where he lived most of his life. He was the son of Neal Clement and Minnie Messick Smith. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II in northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. He earned an American Theater Campaign Medal, EAMET Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a machinist for Erwin Mills and married Mildred Scott. He later worked for the Post Office in Cooleemee and retired in 1982 from the Salisbury Post Office, where he worked as a route carrier and a front window clerk. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Cooleemee, serving as deacon and visiting the sick in their home and in the hospital until his health declined. He enjoyed trading antiques and traveled extensively buying and selling and maintained antique booths at several shops in North Carolina.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Scott Smith; and a sister, Ruby Jordan.
Survivors: 2 sons, Neal F. Smith and wife Susan and Randall T. Smith and wife, Debra, all of Mocksville; 5 grandchildren, Jay and wife Lindsay, Alyssa Smith, Anna S. Jemigan, Paul and Scott Smith; and his friend, Nancy Daniels.
A funeral service was conducted at 2:30 p.m., Monday, March 30 at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Larry Allen and Randall Smith officiating. Burial followed in Rowan Memorial Park, with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign War Memorial Honor Guard. Taps were blown by Don Cover. The family received Monday, March 30 at Eaton Funeral Home.
