- Sharron Leigh Modlin
Sharron Leigh Williams Modlin, 59, of Salisbury, died March 8, 2009 at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
She was born Nov. 7, 1949 in Salisbury to Leonard Lee Williams and the late Gertrude Beatrice Rex Williams. She was a graduate of Boyden High School class of 1967. She worked at Food Lion for 28 years, and went on to be the branch manager at Premier Federal Credit Union at the Veterans Administration Medical Center for 14 years. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church. She was a reader, and enjoyed doing craft shows with her sister Carol, and traveling with her sister Pat and husband Dan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Ray Modlin.
Survivors: 2 sons, Aaron Lee Modlin and wife Emily of Salisbury, Jeffery Alan Modlin of Salisbury, 2 sisters Carol Head and husband Bob of Cooleemee, Pat Patrick and husband Dan of Merritt Island, Fla.; 2 grandchildren, Bailey and Kaleb Modlin; 5 nieces; a nephew; and 11 cousins.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeremy R. Varner, former pastor of Maranatha Bible Church.

Evelyn F. McMenamin
Mrs. Evelyn Francis Magee McMenamin, 74, of Statesville, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Francis J. and Hazel E. Fitch Magee and was a retired pharmacy technician. Mrs. McMenamin was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Statesville. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting and reading past war stories. She always followed her boys through sports in school and donated to charities throughout her life. She stayed in touch with her children and grandchildren always remembering birthdays and special occasions.
She is also preceded in death by her husband, John Hugh McMenamin Sr.; a son, Michael William Johnson; and a brother, Justin Magee.
Survivors: 3 sons, Francis Frank (Joyce Marie) McMenamin of Statesville, John Hugh McMenamin Jr. of South Carolina and Joseph Francis (Patricia) Johnson of Florida; 9 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 18, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with the Rev. Kurt Fohn officiating. Burial was in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale, Fla.

Rebecca Faye McCrary
Mrs. Rebecca Faye Whitaker McCrary, 61, of Statesville, died on Monday, March 9, 2009, at her home after several months of declining health.
She was born Oct. 24, 1947, in Davie County to Hazel Wall Whitaker and the late John H. Whitaker. Mrs. McCrary was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Lee “Ape” McCrary; a sister, Nancy Whitaker; a half brother, Charles Moke Whitaker.
Survivors: her mother, Hazel Whitaker of Salisbury; 2 daughters, Brenda (Gary) Reid of Statesville and Lorrie (Jeff) Landry of Faith; a son, Randy (Phyllis) McCrary of Mocksville; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 5 sisters, Bobbie Wall of Mocksville, Lucille Wall, Bessie Whitaker, Linda (Garry) Basinger, all of Salisbury, Sally (Leroy) Trivette of Harmony; 3 brothers, Johnny (Betty) Whitaker of Salisbury, Martin Whitaker of Statesville and Mitchell (Gail) Whitaker of Salisbury; and a half sister, Mary Katherine McDaniel of Mocksville; and her companion, Julius Jr. Speaks.
A funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 12, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Pastors Raymond Kiser and Mark Kiser officiating. Burial followed in Legion Memorial Park in Cooleemee. The family received friends Wednesday, March 11, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Lucy Bahnson Arndt
Lucy Bahnson Arndt, 67, of Newton, formerly of Cooleemee, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 24, 1941 in Cooleemee to Pauline “Polly” Barber Bahnson and the late Charles F. Bahnson. Mrs. Arndt was a graduate of Davie High School before entering Greensboro College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, a member of the Chancel Choir, the United Methodist Women, and served on the board of directors of the Green Room.
Survivors: her mother Polly Bahnson of Newton, formerly of Cooleemee and Mocksville; her husband of 47 years, Brevard Arndt, formerly of Mocksville; daughters, Melinda Arndt of Raleigh and Laura Medvic and husband Dr. Stephen Medvic of Lancaster, Pa.; grandchildren, George Fladeland and Ross Fladeland; a brother, Charles F. Bahnson Jr. and wife Kathy Bahnson of Charlotte.
A service of remembrance was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Amy Freeze officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont.

James Arthur Cook
Mr. James Arthur Cook, 69, of Mocksville died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 14, 1940 in Forsyth County to Arthur Marion and Virginia Pinnix Cook. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds after 32 years.
Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his father and first wife, Francis Carter Cook.
Survivors: his wife, Allison Haynes Cook of the home; 2 sons, Jimmy Cook and wife Valerie and Joseph Cook, all of Mocksville; a granddaughter, Tiffany McGrady and husband Tedd of Winston-Salem; his mother; 2 sisters, Lois Wooten and husband Landon of Williamsburg, Va. and Gena Chisholm and husband Tommy of Lexington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16 at First Christian Church of Winston-Salem with Dr. Michael D. Simpson officiating. The family received friends prior to the service.

Walling D. Vreeland Jr.
Walling Douglas Vreeland, Jr., M.D., (Wally) died on March 16, 2009.
Mr. Vreeland was born in Fayetteville on May 16, 1927 to Walling Douglas Vreeland Sr. and Dorothy Hawley Vreeland. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he played varsity soccer. He then attended the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He served as a family practice physician in Winston-Salem for more than 35 years. He was Forsyth County’s medical examiner. He was a member of St. Timothys Episcopal Church. He spent his final days in the peace and comfort of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
He was preceded in death by both parents and a sister, Mildred Vreeland Gamber.
Survivors; his wife of 40 years, Joan Bovender Vreeland of Farmington; 3 children, Karen Vreeland Kennedy and husband Paul of Roswell, Ga., Walling Douglas Vreeland III “Van” and wife Denise of Raleigh, and Douglas Ross Vreeland of Winston-Salem; a sister, Phyllis Vreeland Roberts of Charlotte; and 6 grandchildren, Susan Kennedy Pryor, John Fleming Kennedy, Paul Thomas Kennedy Jr., Valerie Danielle Vreeland; Vanessa Vreeland Link and Aaron Vaughn Vreeland.
A funeral service was to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 19 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel on US 158 across from Bermuda Run with the Rev. E. Sealy Cross officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family was to receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 at the funeral home.

Roy Thomas Foster
Mr. Roy Thomas Foster, 90, of Mocksville died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 30, 1918 in Davie County to William Thomas and Bessie Chaplin Foster. Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II participating in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a P-38 mechanic for the 367th Fighter Group and the 392nd squadron of the 9th Air Force.
Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Reavis Foster.
Surviving: 4 children, Linda Foster, Roy Foster Jr. and Steve Foster, all of Mocksville and Myra Nance and husband Randy of Stanfield; 6 grandchildren, Terrie Lee and husband Ron, Pamela Carr and husband Eric, Chad and Shawn Foster and Lisa and Adam Nance and 2 great-grandchildren, Ian and Aaron Carr.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel by the Rev. Marilyn Weiler. Burial followed at Dulin United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Robert Donald Williams
Robert Donald Williams, 60, of Winston-Salem, died March 17, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
He had been an employee of Graham Funeral Home in Mocksville (along with his twin brother Charles Robert Williams) for more than 10 years.

Earnest T.L. Dobson
Mr. Earnest Theodore Lawrance Dobson, 69, of Elkin, died Monday, March 9, 2009 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born on Feb. 5, 1940 to Harvey and Ada Dobson. He was a member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and trustee. He loved fishing, watching NASCAR, and the outdoors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, James, Calvin, Richard, Harvey Jr., and Leroy Dobson.
Survivors: his wife Tenna of the home; 2 daughters, Pamela (Richy) Lomax Jr., of Elkin, India (Roger) Smoot of Mocksville; 2 sons, Aaron (Rita) Dobson of Elkin, Mark Dobson of Dobson; a brother, Dewitt (Katie) Dobson of Dobson; 2 sisters, Magaline Boles of Elkin, Betty (Williams) Hughs of Boonville; 2 grandsons, Daniel Dobson and Jay Lomax; 4 granddaughters, Crystal Dobson, Taylor Smoot, Kimothy Lomax and Melea Dobson; a great-grandchild, Ja'Aura Fonville; 3 step-grandchildren, Cory Reginald and Ryan Lytton; special nieces, Gay Dobson, India Smith, Patricia Boles and Brenda Speaks; special nephew, Wayne Boles; special friend, Missy Phillips; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
The funeral service was to be held Thursday, March 12 at noon at Pleasant Union Baptist Church in Dobson with the Rev. Jackson presiding. Burial was to follow in the church cemetery. The family was to receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.

William Lee Graves Jr.
Mr. William Lee Graves Jr., 53, of East Lake Drive, Mocksville, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009.
Mr. Graves was born Aug. 31, 1955, in Rowan County to Margaret Beaver Graves and the late William Lee Graves Sr. He was employed by Carolina Drilling. Mr. Graves was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mocksville.
Survivors: his mother of Mocksville; 2 daughters, Mary Allison Graves and Megan Elizabeth Graves, both of Mocksville; a sister, Patricia Hendrix of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Robert Graves of Asheboro.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 13, at First United Methodist Church of Mocksville with the Rev. Darren Alexander officiating. The family received friends at the church following the service.

Shirley Sales Redmon
Shirley Jean Sales Redmon, 54, died on March 13, 2009 in Forsyth Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was born in Yadkin County on July 26, 1954, daughter of James Sales and Annie Ruth Revels Brock. She attended Yadkin County Schools and at an early age joined Clarks Chapel Baptist Church in Boonville. In recent years she attended Trinity Baptist Church in Mocksville until her health declined. She loved to sing and to sew.
Survivors: by her father, James Sales of Little Richmond; her mother, Annie R. Revels (William) Brock of Mocksville; 2 sons, Michael Mason of Salisbury and Gary Redmon of Mocksville; a daughter, Shirley M. Mason of Salisbury; 2 sisters, Hazel Rivera and Kennen Brock, both of Mocksville; 2 grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral service were held Tuesday, March 17 at 3 p.m. at Clarks Memorial Baptist Church in Boonville. The Rev. Kenneth C. Hairston officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends 30 minutes before the service.

Billy Eugene Myers
Mr. Billy Eugene Myers, 74, of Advance, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 7, 1934 in Davie County to the late George and Fallie Phelps Myers. Mr. Myers was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Six brothers and 3 sisters preceded him in death.
Surviving: his wife, Joyce K. Myers of the home; 2 sons, Scott Myers and wife Crystal of Advance and Terry Myers and wife Tammy of Mocksville; a grandson, Carson Myers; 2 brothers, Jimmy T. Myers and wife Peggy of Mocksville and Herman H. Myers of Advance; 9 nieces and 10 nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, March 16 at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock and Chaplain A.G. Parker. The family received friends following the service at the church. A graveside service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Wallace Bryant Sparks
Mr. Wallace Bryant Sparks, 85, formerly of Pinebrook School Road, Mocksville, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born May 1, 1923, in Davie County to the late Jasper R. and Odessa Tutterow Sparks. Mr. Sparks was a graduate of Mocksville High School and Dallas Air College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II. Mr. Sparks retired after 36 years with Piedmont Aviation. He attended Dulin United Methodist Church. Mr. Sparks was an outdoorsman, enjoying, hunting, fishing, gardening and working on his tractors. He enjoyed reading, books of choice were Westerns.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Laura Foster Sparks on March 15, 1998; a brother, Jackie Sparks; 6 sisters-in-law, Mazie F. Melton, Hazel F. Thomas, Blanche F. Lagle, Ruth F. Reavis, Helen F. Orrell and Colleen F. Forrest.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Brenda Sparks Silverstein of Galveston, Texas and Kaye Sparks Cook of Winston-Salem; 4 grandchildren, Bryant Williams, Chad (Stephanie) Williams, Damon Cook and Alison Cook; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 stepgreat-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Lucille (Walter) Orrell, Gertrude F. Robertson, all of Advance and Gladys (Claude) F. McNeill of Mocksville; 3 brothers-in-law, George (Ruth) Foster of Mocksville, Felix Reavis of Clemmons and John Forrest of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Swisher officiating. Burial follow in Dulin United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Monday, March 16, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Fred A. Bumgarner Jr.
Fred A. "Red" Bumgarner Jr., 64, of Vanzant Road, Mocksville, died Feb. 28, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Bumgarner was born July 9, 1944, in Statesville, and was the son of the late Fred Allen Bumgarner and Los Isabelle Wyatt Bumgarner. He attended Wayside and Cool Spring schools and was a Baptist. He was proud to be a Vietnam veteran, having served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and an Air Force Good Conduct Medal. After serving his country in the Vietnam War, he returned home to care for his parents. Prior to becoming ill, he was a sports fan and enjoyed spending time on fishing trips with lifelong friends. He was known for his sweet smile and generous spirit. He was retired from Lexington Furniture and Hooker Furniture.
Survivors: 2 brothers, Charles "Sonny" Bumgarner (Grace) of Statesville, and Johnny Bumgarner (Elaine), of Mocksville; a sister, Kay Campbell (Jackie) of Harmony, and numerous nieces, nephews and his dog, "Sandy."
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Joyce Brown and Rachel Ladd; a brother-in-law, William Ladd; and a niece, Judy Bumgarner Travis.
Private graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 4, in the Harmony City Cemetery with the Rev. David Byrd officiating.
