- Janis K. McCulloh
Janis Kathleen “Kathy” McCulloh, 73, of Junction Road, Mocksville, died on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at her home.
Born in Iredell County on Jan. 3, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Lee and Bertha Steward Taylor. She was retired as a CNA, having worked for many years in the health care field. During retirement she worked for Davie Funeral Service and Bunch-Johnson and Reavis funeral homes in Statesville and Harmony. At the time of her death, she was working as a teacher of kindergarten-third grade in the after-school care program at Hardison United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the Ladies Circle at the church.
Her husband, J.W. McCulloh, preceded her in death on March 14, 1991.
Survivors: 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Melanie McCulloh of Salisbury and Frankie and Tammy McCulloh of Gastonia; a daughter, Teresa Couch of Mocksville; 2 brothers, Howard Taylor of Mocksville and Johnny Taylor of Statesville; 2 sisters, Mary Sipes of Salisbury and Lucille Smith of Mocksville; and 6 grandchildren, Tonya Couch and Wesley Couch of Mocksville, Jonathan Morehead, Jonathan McCulloh and Taylor McCulloh, all of Salisbury and John William McCulloh of Gastonia.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dovie Barnhardt, and 3 brothers, Clarence, Charlie and Wayne Taylor.
The service to celebrate her life was held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at Hardison United Methodist Church in Mocksville with Dr. Crystal Alexander officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends on Friday, Feb. 13 at Davie Funeral Service.

Clint Luther Hege
Clint Luther Hege, 83, of Norlina, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.
Mr. Hege was born on Oct. 25, 1925 in Advance, and lived in Norlina for the past 60 years. He was the son of the late Charlie Lewis and Ella Smith Hege. Mr. Hege was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from N.C. State University and spent his 41-year career as a principal and teacher at Norlina High School. He served on the state NCAE certification team and was state FFA advisor. Mr. Hege served as district governor of the Ruritan Club, councilman and mayor pro-tem of Norlina. He was a member of the Norlina United Methodist Church and served as chair of the administrative board, lay leader, and Sunday school teacher. He served on lay witness mission teams for many years. He had perfect attendance for more than 45 years. Mr. Hege was involved in athletics his entire life. He played on N.C. State's Big Four championship baseball team, played in the national semi-pro tournament, and scouted for the Cleveland Indians for more than a decade. He officiated high school and college sports from 1949-2003 and officiated state championships in North Carolina and Virginia.
Mr. Hege was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Rowland Hege; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Survivors: a son, Clint L. Hege Jr. (Paula) of Rocky Mount, Va.; daughter, Pam H. Gorham (Edward) of LaPlata, Md., their 4 children, Laura Striwerka (Rob) of Redondo Beach, Calif., Capt. Marianna Hamilton (Brian) of Castle Rock, Colo., Caroline Edelin (Matt) of LaPlata, Ted Gorham (Holly) of Lanham, Md.; 3 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sarah H. Seaford of Advance.
Mr. Hege's funeral was held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Norlina United Methodist Church, officiated by the Revs. Judson Dunlap, and Dr. Seong- il Eom. Members of the Men's Bible Class served as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers were Tom Traylor, Tom Frazier, Bob Lynch, and Jim Overby.

Noah Sherman Plott
Mr. Noah Sherman Plott, 90, of US 601 South, Mocksville, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was the youngest child of Aaron Kimbrough and Emmaline Riddle Plott, having been born June 16, 1918, in Davie County. Mr. Plott had retired from Drexel-Heritage in 1980 and was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during World War II. Mr. Plott enjoyed trading beagles and hunting. He was a reader and especially loved reading the Bible. Mr. Plott stayed abreast of current events, had a keen mind and wit and loved to share his knowledge with others.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Plott Lagle on Jan. 14, 2009; a son-in-law, Robert Cornatzer; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Survivors: his wife of 66 years, Virginia Daniel Plott; a daughter, Debbie Cornatzer of Advance; a son, Gene (Dot) Plott of Mocksville; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; special nephew, Tommy Berrier; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Eaton Funeral Chapel in Mocksville, with the Rev. Fred Carlton officiating. Burial followed in Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Tony Gray Foster Sr.
Mr. Tony Gray Foster Sr., 57, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Foster was born Dec. 25, 1951, in Forsyth County to Betty Jane Martin Foster and the late Hosia Lee “H.L.” Foster. He was a carpenter by trade, a Christian, and enjoyed riding motorcycles with his family on Sundays. Mr. Foster liked the outdoors and was fond of his two Great Danes, Tootsie and Pluto. His hobbies included fishing and cooking, especially chicken stews and acting like a big kid.
Survivors: his mother of Mocksville; 4 children, Tony Gray Foster Jr., Wendy and Dave Owens, all of Advance, and Clinton and Amber Southern and Jessie and Michael Buffkin, all of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren, Lucas, Morgan, Cameron, Heidi, Taylor and Kyndall; a brother, Clayton Foster of Advance; 2 sisters, Carolyn (Ricky) Sherrill and Lisa (Paul) Cudd, all of Mocksville; several special nieces and nephews, Shawn and Christy Sherrill, Daniel and Donna Hurt, Peyton Reilly Sherrill and Logan Sherrill; and all the guys who ride motorcycles.
A private graveside service was held.

Mildred L. Nance
Mildred L. Nance, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Feb. 13, 2009.
She was born in Davie County to Henry Thomas and Ruth Lagle Nance. Miss Nance was a member of Ardmore Christian Church and was owner of Jay-Debs Beauty Salon for more than 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, James Nance.
Survivors: her nieces, Jayme Earle and husband Trey and Debbie Smothers and husband Tom; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jes Smothers, Jordan Earle, Becca Smothers, and Hannah Earle.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15 at Ardmore Christian Church with Minister David Woolard officiating.

Susan Irene Yanus
Ms. Susan Irene Lee Yanus, 59, of Mocksville, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at her home.
Ms. Yanus was born Feb. 12, 1950, in Broome County, N.Y.
Survivors: her mother and stepfather, Melva and Wayne Vlack of Mooresville; her father and stepmother, Earl and Edna Lee of New York; a daughter, Tammy Tevepaugh of Union Grove; 3 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Diana (James) Palomba of Massachusetts and Joyce Komatowskas of Statesville; and a brother, Keith Vlack of Troutman.
A memorial Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with the Rev. Andrew Draper officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Logan Railyn Byers
Logan Railyn Byers, infant daughter of Brian Byers and Chelsea Correll, died on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Logan was born on Dec. 29, 2008.
Also surviving: a sister, Kyrsten Byers of Cornelius; her maternal grandparents, Christine and Donnie Correll of Mocksville; her paternal grandparents, Steve and Debra Byers of Statesville; 3 uncles, Bryan (Amanda) Correll of Advance, Jason (Teresa) Correll of Advance and Gary (Kara) Byers of Alaska; 3 aunts, Heather (Brian) Prokupek of Troutman and Wanda (Jody) Oxendine of Indian Trail, and her doggie brother, Marley.
The service to celebrate Logan’s life was held on Friday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Roberts officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Friday from 2-3 at the church
