M. Lester Walker
Mr. M. Lester Walker, 92, of Mocksville, died Tuesday Dec. 9, 2008 at his home.
He was born in Davie County on May 10, 1916 and was the son of the late George Luther Walker and Etta Mae Godby Walker. Mr. Walker was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and was a lifelong farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Mayes Walker, died in April, 2008; and by a sister, Matalene Walker Smoot.
Survivors: children, Sylvia W. McDaniel (Charlie) of Mooresville, Robert A. Walker (Bernice), Henry L. Walker (Sandra) of Mocksville and Shelia W. Collins (Harold Jr.) of Lewisburg, Tenn: 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and 3 step great- grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. Salem United Methodist Church, Davie Academy Road, Mocksville with the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30-9 at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.

Pink Foster Penninger
Pink Odessa Foster Penninger, 92, of Needmore Road, Woodleaf, died on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at her home.
Born in Davie County on Oct. 6, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Denny Pink and Cora Belle Foster. She was retired from Cooleemee Mill and was a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Penninger, on July 30, 2007; a brother ,Sylvester B. Foster; and a sister, Mildred C. Jordan.
Survivors: a daughter, Betty Joan Stewart of Woodleaf; a sister, Mary L. Bivens of Salisbury; 3 grandsons, Robbie William Stewart and Ronnie Giles Stewart of Woodleaf and John William Stewart of Rockwell; 4 great-grandchildren, Robbie William Stewart Jr., Ronnie Giles Stewart Jr., Meadow Stewart and Johnna Stewart; and a great-great-grandchild, Katlyn Stewart.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Penninger was held on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor John Groff officiating. Burial was in Rowan Memorial Park. The family received friends on Wednesday from noon-2 p.m.at the funeral home.

Frances Chaffin Tkach
Mrs. Frances Anne Chaffin Tkach, 70, of Clemmons, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at her home.
She was born on July 9, 1938 in Cumberland County to the late Albert and Ruby Starling Chaffin. Mrs. Tkach was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Her parents, a daughter, Valerie Harris, and a sister, Althea LeGrand, preceded her in death.
Survivors: her husband, Edward M. Tkach Sr. of the home; 6 children, Debbie Lowdermilk (Gray) of Mocksville, Edward M. Tkach Jr. of Buffalo, N.Y., Albert G. Tkach (Donna) of Advance, Frankie A. Starnes (James) of High Rock Lake, David A. Tkach (Paula) of Mocksville and Cliff B. Tkach (Renae) of Mocksville; 11 grandchildren, Will, Ben and Kelly Lowdermilk, Heather Vestal, Sterling Tkach and Brandy Shore, Kaylee and Ashlee Trivette, Jesse and Emmie Tkach and Adam Ridenhour; a great-grandson, Aiyden Vestal; and a special friend, David DAmico.
A memorial mass was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church. The family received friends following the service at the church.

Cyrus Clyde Lakey
Cyrus Clyde Lakey, 75, of Madison Road, Mocksville, died on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born in Davie County on March 12, 1933, he was the son of the late Hiram Austin and Margaret Jane Todd Lakey. He was retired from Western Electric and was a member of Hardison United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Betty Jo Foster Lakey, and 3 brothers and a sister.
Survivors: 4 daughters, Auburn (David) Bailey of Mocksville, Brenda (Darrell) Epperson of Oak Ridge, Becky Jones of Mocksville, and Margaret (Kenneth) Bieman of Denver; a sister, Ruth Lakey; 6 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Lakey will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Hardison United Methodist Church with the Revs. Crystal Alexander and Dennis Marshall officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
Mr. Lakey gave his body to medical research so that others may be healed.

Betty Jean Swicegood
Mrs. Betty Jean Ponds Swicegood, 74, of Shady Knoll Lane, Mocksville, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born May 13, 1934, in Rowan County to the late Walter and Mary Pinion Ponds. Mrs. Swicegood was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved cooking and baking for others, doing crafts, puzzles and playing board games and enjoyed fishing at the beach. Mrs. Swicegood was an Air Force mom and wife.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Van Allen Swicegood Jr. on Aug. 17, 2001.
Survivors: 3 daughters, Vanessa (Dennis) Bowen of Tobaccoville, Mary (Henry) Davis of Yadkinville and Janice (Tim) Peeler of Mocksville; 5 grandchildren, Chris, Adam, Melanie, Miranda and T.J.; 8 great-grandchildren, Madison, Lincoln, Kanan, Donovan, Brandon, Andrea, Anna and Savanna; and a special friend, Verla Cartner of Mocksville.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald officiating. The body was placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Cora M. Van Nostran
Mrs. Cora Maupin Van Nostran, 88, of Mocksville, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
She was born Feb. 21, 1920 in Lentner, Mo. to William B. and Imo Speyer Maupin. Mrs. Van Nostran was a member of Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church. She retired in 1994 from Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Phyllis Maupin, and a brother, Weeks Maupin.
Survivors: a daughter, Jacqueline Smith and husband Don of Mocksville; a son, Michael Van Nostran of Mocksville; 2 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Jonathan Hill officiating.

Clara Mae Hopkins
Clara Mae Hopkins, 86, of Axton, Va. died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at her residence.
She was born in Mocksville, June 27, 1922 to the late Lonnie Phillip Hopkins and Emma Flora Leach Hopkins. She was an active member of Calvary Christian Church.
Surviving: her sister, Ruth Louise Hopkins Sowers of Kissimmee, Fla., and her brother, Lonnie Lee Hopkins of Axton, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Dec.10 at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mocksville, with the Revs. Eldon Morgan and Don Reynolds officiating.
