- James Vincent Mannino
Mr. James Vincent Mannino, 58, of US 64 East, Mocksville, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Mannino was born Jan. 15, 1950, in Queens County, N.Y. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during Vietnam. Mr. Mannino was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He was a professor of printing and typography at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Veronica Gray Mannino; and a brother, John Vincent Mannino.
Survivors: his father, Vincent (Nancy) Mannino of Bermuda Run; his wife of 36 years, Kathy DeMarco Mannino of the home; 3 sons, Nick Mannino (Heather Cover) of Mocksville, Kris Mannino (Lyndsay Watt) of Nashville, Tenn. and Kasey Mannino of the home; 2 sisters, Rita (Edward) Utz of Chesapeake, Va., Anna-Jo Mannino (Richard Legg) of Clemmons; a brother-in-law, Lawrence (Leslie) DeMarco of New York; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Salisbury National Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Clement officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign War Memorial Honor Guard.

Virgil Gray Allen
Mr. Virgil Gray Allen, 89, formerly of Gordon Drive, Advance, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Allen was born May 22, 1919, in Davie County, to the late George W. and Lille Mae Riddle Allen. He was a simple and kind man who never offended anyone. Mr. Allen loved his nephews and never met a stranger.
He was also preceded in death by 2 infant sisters and by sisters Josephine Allen and Dorothy Allen.
Survivors: a brother, Wayne (Sarah) Allen of Winston-Salem; 2 nephews, Byron G. Allen and Benjamin W. Allen; and numerous cousins and extended family.
A graveside service was conducted at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

Rose Estelle Owings
Rose Estelle Owings, 48, of US Hwy 64 West, Mocksville, died on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at her residence.
Born in Davie County on May 15, 1960, she was the daughter of the late John Bert Owings and Ethel Estelle Cloer. She was a homemaker and a member of Edgewood Baptist Church.
Survivors: a brother, Ricky (Joanne) Owings of Mocksville.
A service to celebrate the life of Ms. Owings was held on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. at Edgewood Baptist Church with the Revs. Danny Shore and Fred Carlton officiating. She was to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. Burial will be in the Society Baptist Church Cemetery. The family was to receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 7-9 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel.

Johnsie Tucker Shelton
Mrs. Johnsie Tucker Shelton, 97, of the Four Corners community of Mocksville, died on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Mrs. Shelton was born in Winston-Salem on July 23, 1911, to the late Charlie and Cora Tucker. Her mother died when she was 8 years old. She then moved to Trap Hill to live with her Uncle Watt Tucker and his large family. She lived with them until her late teens. Mrs. Shelton moved to Courtney, where she met and fell in love with her late husband, Joe Shelton. They lived the last 56 years of her life in the Four Corners community, where she was a storekeeper at Four Corners Grocery for many years. She enjoyed her family and friends, fishing, gardening, card playing, board games, the Atlanta Braves, cooking, and sewing.
Mrs. Shelton was also preceded in death by an infant son, 2 brothers, Carle and Gurney Tucker and 2 sisters, May Cox and Mildred Hutchens.
Survivors: 2 sons, Von (Madeline) Shelton and Bobby (Peggy) Shelton of Mocksville; 6 grandchildren, Cindy (Bart) McLean of Atlanta, Sandra Shelton, Con (Raymonda) Shelton of Mocksville, Dawn (Tim) Hughes, and Ken (Loye) Shelton, of Advance, Ginger (Jon) Missert of Mooresville; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Mark White.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Shelton was held on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Tookey officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Davie Funeral Service Chapel.

William Daniel Marion
Mr. William Daniel Marion, 83, of Mocksville, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 at Brookstone Retirement Center in Lexington.
Mr. Marion was born in Surry County on Jan. 5, 1925 to the late Daniel Marion and Leona Pardue Marion. He was a deputy sheriff  in Davie County for many years and implemented the Junior Deputies for Children.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Holcomb Marion.
Survivors: 5 children, Vivian (Richard) Cook, Dan (GiGi) Marion, all of Mocksville, John (Patti) Marion of Salisbury, and Kathy (Dean) Hedrick, and Renee (Rodney) Leonard, all of Lexington, 2 brothers, Sam Marion of Elkin and Bob Marion of Mt. Airy; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Monday, Oct. 27, at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. A graveside service followed at 3 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road.

Grover C. Barnes Jr.
Grover Cleveland Barnes Jr., 60, of Lexington, died on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at WFU Baptist Medical Center.
Born in Tarboro on July 29, 1948, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Sr. and Ethel Elizabeth Rooker Barnes. He was employed in the furniture industry and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors: a brother, James Edward (Diane) Barnes of Reeds; 2 sisters, Ethel Hedrick and Dorothy Toler of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews, including Tina Deters of Mocksville.
A celebration of life service for Mr. Barnes was held on Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at Gods Little Chapel, Archdale, with the Rev. Michael Watkins officiating. The family receive friends on Monday at the church.

Lucy Lyons Howell
Lucy Jane Lyons Howell, 108, of Yadkinville, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 at her residence.
She was born Feb. 15, 1900 to the late Julus and Mandy McHam Lyons. She worked in the cafeteria at Farmington school. She became a member of Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church when she was 7 years old. She was the oldest member of the Yadkin Davie Association.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Will Boyce Howell on Jan. 27, 1962; her son, Hardin Boyce Howell, Dec. 11, 1992; 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
Surviving: her daughter-in-law, Cornelia C. Howell; granddaughter, Mozella “Mo” (Paul) Dobson; granddaughter, Ruby C. Howell; step-granddaughter, Addie (Norman) Gillispie; great-grandchildren, Paula (Danny) Waugh, Kevin Dobson, Danny Mayfield, Yvette Mayfield, Bill Mayfield, Angela (Jerry) Dulin, Leonard Holland, Danette Holland; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral was to be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. C.A. Stewart. She was to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial was to follow in the church cemetery. The family was to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.

Lillie Segraves Snider
Mrs. Lillie Segraves Snider, 100, of Trinity Oaks, Salisbury died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 21, 1908 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Sam B. and Elizabeth Owens Segraves. Mrs. Snider was educated in the Davie County schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Davie County. Mrs. Snider enjoyed quilting, crocheting, word search puzzles and people watching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Rufus Snider Sr. on Nov. 3, 1982 and daughters, Mrs. William (Clara) Snider Simerson on Feb. 17, 1988, sisters, Ruth Segraves Whitlock Stone and Ethel Segraves Brown, brothers, Homer and Frank Segraves.
Survivors: her sons, Samuel B. Snider and wife Vera of Virginia Beach, Va., William R. Snider Jr. of Salisbury, Robert L. Snider and wife Candy of Salisbury, Harold Snider and wife Jan of Salisbury; daughters, Jean Thompson and husband James of Salisbury, Virginia Snider Beck of Burlington, Doris Lentz and husband Wayne of China Grove; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; 4 step great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Graham, minister of Canaan Baptist Church, officiating. A funeral service was conducted by 11 a.m. Thursday at No Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Eddie Fowler officiating. Mrs. Snider was to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial followed at the church cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday at Summersett Funeral Home .

Roger Lee Boles
Roger Lee Boles, 65, of Mocksville, died on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. He lived at Heritage of Cedar Rock.
Born in Forsyth County on March 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Gabriel Heath and Mildred Motsinger Boles. He had worked at Allied Tool of Kernersville and was a member of Century Park Baptist Church in Kernersville.
Survivors: a daughter, Mindy Lee Boles of High Point; 2 brothers, Kenneth Ray Boles of Clemmons and Larry Stephen (Linda) Boles of Advance; a sister, Kathy (Daniel) Slater of Advance; a granddaughter, Ablina Fuentes of High Point; special nieces Renea Bledsoe and Rebecca Boles; and special nephews Jason Kildoo, Ryan Kildoo, and Stephen Boles.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Boles.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Boles was Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Revs. Glenn Murphy and Richard Mathis officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home. Burial was on Friday at 3 p.m. at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem.
