- Mary Slawter Ellis
Mary Slawter Ellis, 77, of Milling Road, Mocksville, died on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at Davie County Hospital.
Born in Surry County on May 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Chester A. and Irene Collins Slawter. She was a homemaker and member of Cornatzer Baptist Church where she was active in the Ladies Fellowship.
Her husband, Elgin G. Ellis Sr., preceded her in death in 1992.
Survivors: a son, Elgin Glenn (Connie) Ellis Jr., of Mocksville; 2 daughters, Vicki (Neil) Williams and Melinda (Isaac) Norman, all of Mocksville; 2 sisters, Bennie Chaplin of Mocksville and Carol (Dan) Rhodes of Lexington; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Ellis was held on Monday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. at Cornatzer Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Beverly officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Monday from 3-4 p.m. at the church.

Annis Miller Smith
Mrs. Annis Miller Smith, 83, wife of Harold Jack Smith Sr., died Sunday morning, Feb. 22, 2009 at Duke Medical Center.
The couple had just celebrated their 63rd year of marriage. She was retired from Russell Stover Candy Co. and had worked at Burlington Industries in Oxford. She was a faithful member of Marrow's Chapel United Methodist Church where funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. Officiating was the Rev. Chad Holtz. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her husband: a daughter Hilda Penwell (Sam) of Mocksville; sons Jack Smith Jr. (Margaret), Jeff Smith (Pat), all of Hillsborough, Jim Smith and Bob Smith (Susan), all of Clarksville; 8 granddaughters; a grandson; a step granddaughter and grandson; 8 great-grandchildren.

Ruth D. Macdonald
Mrs. Ruth Lorraine Deadmon Macdonald, 91, of Mocksville, died on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at approximately 11:27 a.m. surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of Ruth Mariane Bergeur and Eustace A. Deadmon. She touched many lives and dedicated her life to God, friends, family, and her animals.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Macdonald; a daughter, Ruth Macdonald; a son, Gary Macdonald; a brother, Edward Deadmon; and her twin brother, who died in infancy who Ruth attributes to being her guardian angel.
Survivors: her best friend, her daughter, Kathleen Caci and husband, Bill; 2 granddaughters, Mary Kay Dyson and husband Philip and Michele Hall and husband Bobby; 4 great-grandchildren, Kaitlin and Spencer Hall, and Meghan and Ryan Dyson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald officiating. Inurn-ment followed in the church cemetery.

Lester N. Hilton
Mr. Lester N. Hilton of Advance died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009.
He was born on Nov. 10, 1923 to Phillip and Ella Hilton. He was preceded in death on March 9, 2006 by his wife, Marquetta, by 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
Survivors: his daughters, Jacqueline H. Johnson and Sue H. Orrell (Rocky); a special friend, J.B. Dunn; 3 sisters, Doris Mock, Mary Myers and Jessie Mullis (James); and a brother, Eddie Hilton (Emily).
Mr. Hilton was one of the CC Boys who later went to California where he joined the Merchant Marines. He retired from Carolina Marble and Tile. His motto was “If someone is smart enough to invent it, I should be smart enough to make it work.” Mr. Hilton was a master of jokes who loved life.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Nathan Miller Horton
Nathan Miller Horton, 78, of NC 801 South, Mocksville, died on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Sommerville, N.J., on June 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Nathan Clarance and Marion Louise Miller Horton. He was a retired self-employed truck driver and mechanic and was of the Presbyterian faith.
His wife, Rose Hannah Potts Horton, preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 1994.
Survivors: 2 sons, George Edward (Kathleen Rose) Horton of Lancaster, S.C. and Louis Miller Horton of Yardley, Pa.; 2 daughters, Susan Marie (Robert) Fidler of New Vernon, N.J. and Lisa Louise (Ted) Mickalowski of Mocksville; a brother, Elias Edward (Ethel) Horton, of Loveland, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Horton was also preceded in death by a son, Walter William Horton and a great-grandson, James A. Barber.
Mr. Horton will be taken from Davie Funeral Service to the Coughlin Funeral Home in Califon, N.J. for services and burial in the Foxhill Cemetery in Fairmount, N.J.

Billy Don Byerly
Mr. Billy Don Byerly, 55, of NC 801 South, Advance, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born March 24, 1953, in Davidson County to the late J.W. and Mary Jane Branch Byerly. Mr. Byerly was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Mocksville. He enjoyed the outdoors, loved the Fulton community and spending time with his grandchildren
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ruby Random and Dorothy Reid; and 2 brothers, Marvin and Ray Byerly.
Survivors: a daughter, Brook Byerly of Mocksville; 4 grandchildren, Ian, Spencer, Ashley and Chris; 3 sisters, Edith Clark of Lexington, Betty (Bob) Potts of Advance, Brenda (Rickie) Lanier of Advance; 3 brothers, J.B. (Noel) Byerly of Lexington, Ronnie (Janeen) Byerly of South Carolina and Jerry (Lynn) Byerly of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, at Methodist Episcopal Church South at Fulton with Dr. Darrell Cox and Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. Burial follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 21, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Troy Billings
Troy Martin Billings, 86, of Statesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Wilkes County and was the son of the late James Calloway and Ada Mahaffey Billings. He served in the U.S. Army in Central Europe, the Rhineland and Germany during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a retired tool and dye maker with Southern Screw Co. and a greeter at Wal-Mart following his retirement. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, a usher, a member of the Welcome Committee and of the Senior Adult Sunday school class. He also was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying.
He was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Florence Beal, Edith Nicholson and Hazel Galliher; and 2 brothers, Garnis and James Billings.
Survivors: his wife of 59 years, Mary Lou Parks Billings, whom he married on July 16, 1949; 2 daughters, Sherry Gupton (Mike) of Raleigh, and Robin Niblock of Statesville; a son, Jeffrey Lynn Billings (Judy) of Statesville; a sister, Ola Mae Alexander (Fred), of Elkin; 2 brothers, Thomas Billings (Sybil) of Fayetteville, and John Billings of South Korea; a sister-in-law, Joyce Billings of Statesville; 6 grandchildren, Vinny VanCour, Robert VanCour, Andy Wales, Graham Wales, George Niblock IV and Mary Niblock; 3 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services celebrating his life were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Hebron Baptist Church with the Revs. Darren Johnson, William Wease and J.C. Parks officiating. The lay in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour and burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors accorded by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail. The family received friends Friday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
