- Sharon Davon Etchison
Sharon Davon Etchison, 47, died on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem from complications of Lupus.
She was born March 5, 1961, to Rondal and Beatrice Foster Smoot. She was a 1980 graduate of Davie High School, and attended Livingstone College for two years. In high school and college she enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball and softball. Her hobbies were needlepoint, crossword puzzles and playing solitaire on the computer. She also loved spending time with her mother daily, and taking care of her husband and daughter.
Survivors: her husband, Billy Etchison and daughter Sabrina Etchison, both of the home; step-daughter, Sherri (Wesley) Moore; 2 grandchildren, Wesley Moore Jr., and Kaela Moore; her parents, William Rondal and Beatrice Foster Smoot; 3 sisters Carol (Frank) Fisher, Patricia McClelland, Rhonda Grant-Smoot; 2 brothers, Dennis Ashley Smoot, William Irvin Ricky Smoot; a half-sister, Terina Anderson; her mother and father-in-law, Billy and Elizabeth Etchison; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses in Mocksville.

Charles E. Dodson Jr.
Charles Edward “Chuck” Dodson Jr., 42, of Woodleaf, died Friday, Feb. 6, at his home.
Born in DeKalb County, Ill., on Nov. 26, 1966, he was the son of the late Charles Edward Dodson Sr. and Nancy Pauline Arwood Packett of Mocksville, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a construction worker, and a member of King James Baptist Church.
Also surviving: his wife, Beth Crenshaw Dodson; a son, Harley David Dodson of Spring Valley, Ill.; 3 daughters, Amanda Christian Dodson of Rochelle, Ill., Tiana Nicole Dodson (Jon) Hester of Siler City, and Denver Sioux Dodson of Spring Valley; a sister, Christine Marie Blackburn of Knoxville, Tenn.; his stepfather, Hank Packett of Mocksville; a stepson, Casey James Rodgers of Belvidere, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Aleasha Sueann Rogers of Rockford, Ill., a stepsister, Amanda Packett of Mocksville; a grandson, Brayden Turtle Bullock of Rockford; 2 nieces, Deseree Sugarbear Turner of Mocksville and Laney Christine Griswold of Canton; a nephew, Tyler James Griswold of Dixon, Ill.; numerous aunts and uncles.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Dodson was to be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Bill Simpson officiating. The family was to receive friends Thursday from noon-2 p.m.

Roxie Yates Sain
Mrs. Roxie Carlene Yates Sain, 55, of Call Road, Mocksville died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a brief illness.
She was born in Grundy, Va. on July 12, 1953, to the late Frenchman and Myrtle Faye Boyd Yates. She had worked at Hanes Brands for the last 12 years. She had been a truck driver for Burlington Motor Carriers and had worked at several sewing factories.
She was also preceded in death by 2 daughters, Angela Denise Lynn Shortridge and Elizabeth Faye Stiltner; a granddaughter, Sarah Dawn Stiltner; 2 brothers, Samuel and Jennings Yates; and her father-in-law, Lester Sain.
Survivors: her husband of 10 years, Roger Dale Sain of the home; a daughter, Phyllis Geraldine Stiltner (Michael Blakenship) of Grundy, Va.; a son, Dillard McKinley “Mack” Stiltner of Mocksville; 3 sisters, Christine White (James) of Oakwood, Va., Hattie Prater and Rebal Keen (Franklin) all of Grundy; her mother-in-law, Lucille Sain; sister-in-law, Myra Hellard (Jack), all of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Eaton Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home.

Margaret Kirk Hunt
Margaret Kirk Hunt, 81, of Whiteville, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Whiteville.
She was the daughter of the late William Arnold Kirk and Gladys Stone Kirk. Mrs. Hunt was born in Concord, but lived in Cooleemee until she went to college. She was a graduate of Greensboro College with a degree in English, and for 30 years, she taught in the public schools in North Carolina. In 1966, Mrs. Hunt moved to Whiteville, where she was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and served as organist for 35 years.
Survivors: her husband, James Wood Hunt of Whiteville.
The memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church in Whiteville, with the Rev. Anne Natoli officiating.

Richard Arzle Hodgson
Mr. Richard Arzle Hodgson, 69, of Spring Lake, died on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors: his wife, Priscella (McLucas) Hodgson; a son, Richard Dean Hodgson; 2 daughters, Djuna Louise Melton and Dianne Marcel Raynor; 9 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
His funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at Adcock Funeral Home Chapel in Spring Lake. Burial was at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Bragg.

Bruce Eugene Spry
Mr. Bruce Eugene Spry, 93, of Gladstone Road, Mocksville, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born April 4, 1915, in Davie County to the late Joseph Franklin Spry Sr. and Bessie Safley Spry. Mr. Spry was retired from Fiber Industries and was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Bluebird Society and the Davie County Craft Association. Mr. Spry was a gardener and enjoyed woodworking.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Elizabeth Couch Spry on July 4, 1999; and 3 sisters, Margaret Brown, Helen Snider and Libby Richkus.
Survivors: a daughter, Linda (Bill) Denton of Mocksville; a son, Don (Carol) Spry of Mocksville; 6 grandchildren, Eric (Lisa Finch) Dwiggins, Chris (Jennifer) Dwiggins, Amanda Dwiggins, Catherine (Adam) Lynch, Ellen Hebert and Erin (Kathy) Spry; 6 great-grandchildren, Savannah Dwiggins, Kadence Lynch, Skyler Dwiggins, Cattie Hebert, Abbie Hebert and Hunter Chamberlain; 3 step-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild; 2 sisters, Lois Munday and Betty (Jerry) Patterson, all of Mocksville; 3 brothers, Joe (Elizabeth) Spry Jr. of Salisbury and James and Lewis Spry, both of Mocksville; special friend, Myrtle Wilson of Mocksville; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Liberty United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Roberts officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Eaton Funeral Home.

Lillie Taylor Vogler
Mrs. Lillie Byerly Taylor Vogler, 95, formerly of the Elms at Tanglewood in Clemmons, died Feb. 10, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born Jan. 4, 1914 in Davie County to the late Charles Joseph and Georgia Byerly Taylor. Mrs. Vogler was a member of Advance United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, T.W. Jack Vogler in 1993; a brother, John Taylor and 2 sisters, Erma King and Dorothy Outland.
Surviving: a daughter, Barbara Vogler Waldrop of Advance; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at Advance United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Cheryl Skinner and Jeff Carter officiating. The family was to receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.
