Huston Jim Frye
Huston Jim Frye, 67, of Cornatzer Road, Mocksville, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at his home.
Mr. Frye was born Feb. 12, 1939, in Davie County to the late Floyd Benjamin and Pearl Potts Frye. He was the owner of Frye Siding and Guttering and was a member of Cornatzer Baptist Church. Mr. Frye’s hobbies included gardening, woodworking and working with his tractors.
He was also preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Annie Ruth Frye; and a brother, Lindsey Lee Frye.
Survivors: his wife, Vickie Franks Frye of the home; a daughter, Andrea (Casey) Foster of Mocksville; a son, Alan (Lynn) Frye, of Mocksville; 3 grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Annie Ruth (Weldon) Allen, Peg (Buck) Shoaf and Polly (Mike) Fivecoats, all of Mocksville.
A funeral service was to be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Cornatzer Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Whiteheart officiating. The visitation was to be at the church, following the service. A graveside service was to be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Cornatzer Baptist Church Cemetery.

Doris Hilton Lakey
As her family gathered at her bedside, Doris Hilton Lakey died Sept. 21, 2006, after several years of declining health.
Born May 3, 1938, in Ashe County, she was one of 11 children born Ned and Nancy Dillard. She married James R. Hilton on Sept. 20, 1954, and had six children. After his death in March 1993, she married Charlie H. Lakey. Mrs. Lakey worked for many years at Baker Furniture and had retired from Davie Florist of Mocksville. She was a member of the Conquerors Sunday school class at Trinity Baptist Church, where she attended until her health wouldn’t permit.
Mrs. Lakey was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Lakey; 2 brothers, James Dillard and Robert Dillard; 2 sisters, Faye McGinnis and Helen Winebarger; and 3 granddaughters, Tara Howell Parker, Mysti Howell Poplin and Megan Elizabeth Howell.
Survivors: Ronnie Hilton of the home, Keith (Crystal) Hilton, Brenda (Rick) Howell, Robert (Grace) Hilton, Bonnie (Chuck) Brown, all of Mocksville, and Donna (John) Morrison of Mount Ulla; 2 stepsons, Doug (Angie) Lakey and Chuck (Scarlett) Lakey, all of Mocksville; a stepdaughter, Marsha (George) Dayton of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; 7 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Bruce Dillard of Taylorsville and Clarence Dillard of Mocksville; sisters, Georgia Hartzog of Newport News, Va., Betty Bledsoe of West Jefferson, Hazel (Don) Smith of Mocksville and Nellie (Leonard) Vannoy of Winston-Salem; and special family, David and Rhonda OSteen of Alexandria, Va.
A funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Trinity Baptist Church, with Pastor Darrell Cox officiating.
Elbert McLean Hall
Mr. Elbert McLean Hall, 77, of Mocksville, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Hall was born March 6, 1929, in Harnett County to the late Alfred Roland and Lizzie Brisson Hall. He was retired from Van Can Co. Mr. Hall was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge in Martinsville, Va. Mr. Hall was a graduate of Elizabethtown High School class of 1946. Mr. Hall was an Atlanta Braves fan and his favorite pastime was spending time with family.
Survivors: a daughter, Pam Hall of Mocksville; a son, Rick Hall and wife Judy of Mocksville; 3 sisters, Rusty Lovelace of Calimesa, Calif., Ruby Phillips and Doris Nichols, both of Rockingham; a brother, Ralph Hall of Port Orange, Fla.; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and his dog, Daisy.
A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Eaton Funeral Chapel.

Linda Lee Van Horn
Linda Lee Van Horn, 55, of Hospital Street, Mocksville, died on Sunday, Oct. 1, at Davie Place.
Born in Santa Barbara, Calif. on June 9, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Banks and Eva Mae Casteel Foster. She had last worked for the Salvation Army in Winston-Salem.
Survivors: a son, Kevin (Dawn) Van Horn of Germany; 3 sisters, Vonda (Kenneth) Moore of Mocksville, Arleta (Virgil) Cook of Meridan, Kan. and Joann (Billy) Neal of Maybank, Texas; 3 brothers, John (Nancy) Rooney of Mission, Texas, Bryan (Debbie) Tillett of Smith Center, Kan. and Lewis L. Foster of Selena, Okla.; and 2 grandchildren.
Memorial services for Ms Van Horn will be held at later date in Kansas.
Marcia Jones Towell
Mrs. Marcia Veatrice Jones Towell, 95, of Davie Academy Road, Mocksville, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Davie County Hospital.
Mrs. Towell was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Davie County to the late Hampton Calhoun and Ida Shives Jones. She lived her entire life in Davie County, graduating from Mocksville High School, class of 1929 and was retired from Davie County Tax Collectors Office. Her lifetime priorities were family, community and church, Jericho Church of Christ, where she was a lifelong member.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Lemuel Reid Towell in 1987; a son, James Carl Towell; great-granddaughter, Tess; 3 sisters, Mary Lagle, Helen Koontz and Frances Turner Williams; and 2 brothers, J.C. and Carl Jones.
Survivors: her children, Anne Gary (Bill) of Mount Holly, Johnny (Jeannie) of Harmony, Jane Lentz of Boone and Joe (Debbie) of Mocksville; 6 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and her youngest sister, Bert Graves of Mocksville.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Jericho Church of Christ, with Dr. Tom Torpy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Annie Starr Frye
Mrs. Annie Ruth Starr Frye, 77, of Cornatzer Road, Mocksville, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Frye was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Davie County to the late George Washington and Emma Florence Allen Starr. She was retired from Davie County School system and was a faithful member of Cornatzer Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Frye enjoyed traveling with the senior citizens group, water aerobics and was a loyal grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Luther Carl Frye on April 30, 2001; 2 sisters, Pauline Sidden and Mary Murphy; and a brother, Harvey Lee Starr, and infant brother, Billy Starr.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Linda (Sam) Bailey and Cinda (Marvin) Smith, all of Mocksville; a son, Wayne (Daphne) Frye of Advance; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law, Annie Ruth (Weldon) Allen, Peg (Buck) Shoaf, Polly (Mike) Fivecoats and Mae Starr; and brother-in-law, Jim (Vickie) Frye.

Jamie Darren Wagoner
Mr. Jamie Darren Wagoner, 37, of Cadillac Lane, Mocksville, did Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Wagoner was born Aug. 31, 1969 in Iredell County to James and Gladys Vannoy Wagoner.
Survivors: his wife, Laura Dancy Wagoner of the home; 7 sons, Frankie Bracken, Darren Wagoner, Tater Wagoner, all of Elkin, Taylen Dancy, Noah Wagoner, Johnathan Wagoner and Jeremiah Wagoner, all of Mocksville; a brother, Michael E. Anderson of Millers Creek; and 2 sisters, Sandra Wyatt of Union Grove and Georgia Boyd of Elkin.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Stanley officiating. Burial was in the Roberts Family Cemetery in McGrady.
Gilbert Lee Boger
Mr. Gilbert Lee Boger, 79, of Clayton Drive, Mocksville, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Boger was born May 22, 1927, in the Cana community of Davie County to the late Clyde H. and Lula Richie Boger. He was a dairy farmer. Mr. Boger had served in the General Assembly from 1966 to 1968, then again in 1972, and had served in the Senate from 1981-1982. In the early 1970s, he built Sugar Valley Airport, where he operated a flight school. Mr. Boger entered the real estate business and owned and operated Boger Real Estate. He was one of the original 10 licensed appraisers in North Carolina and in 1985, the governor appointed him as real estate commissioner.
Survivors: his wife, Maxine Smith Boger of the home; a daughter, Cindy Boger (Tucker) Mitchell of Huntersville; 2 sons, Ronnie (Robbin) Boger of Advance and Warren (Jennifer) Boger of Mooresville; 2 sisters, Geraldine Paschal of Alabama and Faye Finwall of Lenoir; 2 brothers, Henry (Barbara) Boger of Advance and Benny (Mary) Boger of Mocksville; and 6 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Advance with the Rev. Dennis Marshall officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mildred Eaton Oehman
Mrs. Mildred Louise Eaton Oehman died Oct. 1, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born May 14, 1921 in Davie County to Wade Hampton and Laura Peoples Eaton. Mrs. Oehman was a bookkeeper, housewife, and member of Bethania Moravian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wade H. Eaton Jr. of Georgia.
Survivors: her husband of 50 years, Robert Edward Oehman Sr.; a son, Robert E. Oehman and wife Charlotte of Raleigh; a daughter, Martha Oehman Lain and partner Martin Reed; a granddaughter; a brother, Thomas Leroy Eaton and wife Elsie of Georgia; 2 sisters, Mary Nell Hanes and Elizabeth Elaine Foster and husband Larry; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Bethania Moravian Church at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Wayne Byerly and Charles Fishel officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Jessie Murphy Rader
Jessie Virginia Murphy Rader of Clemmons, formerly of Morganton, died on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease after 10 years of declining health.
She was born Nov. 16, l927 in Yancey County to Jesse and Mattie Lou Wilson Murphy, who preceded her in death, along with 6 brothers and sisters. An infant son, Mark Andrew Rader preceded her in death in 1957.
Survivors: a brother, Vernie Murphy of the Veteran’s Hospital, Oteen; and a sister, Mrs. Effie (Roy) Prueitt of Morganton; her husband of 57 years, Bill Rader of Clemmons; a daughter, Teresa Rader Pitts of Bermuda Run; 3 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was employed with Southern Bell Tel & Telegraph at the first telephone office in Morganton. Her career took her through 36 years of growth and expansion with Bell South, ending in Lenoir, before her retirement. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and attended Sunday School and church at Calvary Baptist Church, Morganton, until her health declined. She went about her business quietly, enjoying family, home, neighbors, growing vegetables and flowers, and cooking for family and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2. Burial followed in Forest Hill Cemetery.

John Douglas Shields Sr.
Mr. John Douglas Shields Sr., 92, of Mocksville, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at his home.
He was born Oct. 20, 1913 in Forsyth County to Robah Clay and Lala Johnson Shields. Mr. Shields was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School. He was a charter member of Knollwood Baptist Church, a member of Bermuda Run Golf and Country Club and a life member of the Twin City Club. Mr. Shields was a member of the Deacons Club and was on the committee to build the new stadium. He established his own business in 1948. Shields Inc. became the largest plaster and dry wall contractor in the Southeast and ranked in the top five among contractors in the United States as a user of Armstrong Cork Co.’s acoustical ceiling materials. He was on the board of directors of the Seven Devils ski resort near Boone and was a director of the Winston-Salem Land Development Co.
Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ralph and Clay Shields.
Survivors: his wife of 72 years, Chattie Livengood Shields; 2 daughters, Pat Hege and husband Curt Hege and Jean Wilson and husband W. Hughes Wilson III; 3 sons, John Shields Jr. and wife Joyce, Herbert Vernon Shields and wife Virginia, and Joe Ralph Shields; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mary Louise Highfill of Lorton, Va.; a brother, Hal Shields of Wilmington; and many nieces and nephews.
There was a private grave-side service on Monday, Oct. 2.
