- Barbara Smith Carter
Barbara “Dawn” Smith Carter, 44, of Klickitat Trail, Mocksville, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 at her home following a battle with glioblastoma multiforme, a malignant brain tumor.
She was born on May 18, 1964 in Davie County. She was a devoted mother to her son and enjoyed spending time with family. Prior to her illness, she volunteered her time at several schools in Davie County.
She was preceded in death by her father, William “Bert” Smith, grandfather, Alfred “Reno” Dunn, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Smith and uncles, Cecil (Cathy S. Barney) Smith and John Wesley (Nora) Smith Jr.
Survivors: a son, Austin Ryan Carter; her mother, Barbara Dunn Smith of Mocksville; a brother, William “Scott” Smith of Mocksville; her grandmother, Evelyn Murphy Dunn of Advance; aunts and uncles, Sandra (Kevin) Cline, Linda (Don) Spake, Dorothy (Bunk) Everhart, Margaret (York) Perrell, Sherman (Linda) Dunn, Dewey (Ann) Dunn and Dallas (Wilma) Smith; numerous cousins and extended family.
A graveside service was conducted at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Marshall officiating.
Memorials: American Brain Tumor Assoc. (ABTA), 2720 River Road, Des Plaines, IL 60018.

Melvin Harold DeHart
Mr. Melvin Harold DeHart, 56, of Mocksville died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. 
Mr. DeHart was born in Rutherford County to the late Thomas Jacob and Mary Lou Calloway DeHart on Sept. 7, 1952. Mr. DeHart was a fisherman who loved growing roses. 
Survivors: his wife, Pauline of the home; a daughter, Brandy Laws and husband Wayne, a granddaughter, Brianna Laws, all of Rutherford County; a sister Linda Hunt of Davie County; a brother, Roger DeHart and wife Laura of Advance; 2 nephews Glenn Hunt Jr. and David Hunt. 
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.  The family received friends Friday evening at the funeral home.

Gilbert George Sofley
Mr. Gilbert George Sofley, 84, of Advance, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008 at his home.
Mr. Sofley was born Jan. 28, 1924 in Davie County to the late Jim and Margie Foster Sofley. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II and was retired from I.L. Long Construction Co. Mr. Sofley was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee for many years.
Surviving: his wife, Nelda Beauchamp Sofley of the home; a sister, Nellie Reece Cook of Advance; 2 brothers, Martin and Roy Sofley of Advance; his neighbor, who was like a daughter to him, April Newman and husband Jeff and their children, Samuel, Elisabeth, and Hannah.
The family received friends Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. The funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 with the Rev. Mark Weekley officiating.
Memorials: Hospice/Palliative Care Center, 377 Hospital St., Mocksville.

Mary Cranfill Allen
Mrs. Mary Louise Cranfill Allen, 86, of Dalton Road, Mocksville, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at Davie Place Residential Care.
She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Davie County to the late Stamey and Lizzie Jordan Cranfill. Mrs. Allen was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church. She was employed by Monleigh Garment Co. for more than 30 years. Mrs. Allen enjoyed crocheting, cooking.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Loyde Grant Allen Sr. on Nov. 5, 1982; a son, L.G. Allen Jr.; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Michaela Draughn; a sister, Kathlyn Jones; and 2 brothers, Lester Cranfill and Wayne Cranfill.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Carolyn Foster of Mocksville and Donna (Roger) Lambeth of Asheboro; 2 sons, Joe (Cathy) Allen of Wilson and Dale (Cathy) Allen of Salisbury; 8 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Ann Allen of Mocksville.
A funeral service was conducted at noon Friday, Oct. 31, at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Carlton officiating. Burial followed in Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Kathy Diane Darnell
Kathy Diane Darnell, 67, of Advance, died while surrounded by family on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, after an extended illness. 
She was born June 21, 1941 in Forsyth County to Jack and Kathleen Darnell. She retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco after 25 years. She was a long-time member of Woodland Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian who loved God, her family and her two dogs, Pockets and Trixie.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Frank Doss.
Survivors: 4 sisters, Linda (Franklin) Doss, Brenda (Mike) Newsome, Cindy (Steve) Vernon, Teresa (Wade) Atkins; 2 brothers, Lucky (Rhonda) Darnell and Joe (Pandora) Darnell; 2 uncles, Ray Beeson and Pete (Pauline) Darnell; 21 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews. 
A funeral service was conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with her nephews, Pastor Andy Doss and David Darnell officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family received friends Friday at the funeral home.

Berlie Wagner Wyatt
Mrs. Berlie Dean Wagner Wyatt, 73, of US 64 East, Mocksville, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at her home.
She was born Oct. 3, 1935, in Davie County to the late John and Sadie Mae Crotts Wagner. Mrs. Wyatt was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Cooleemee High School. Mrs. Wyatt enjoyed quilting, sewing and doing crafts. She loved sitting and watching her hummingbirds.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Gene Wyatt, on Nov. 2, 1990; and a daughter, LuAnn Wyatt in 1978.
Survivors: 2 daughters, Brenda (Gary) Hawks of Mocksville and Sherri (Jerry) Jones of Advance; a son, Mitch Wyatt of Mocksville; 5 grandchildren, Teresa (Craig) Reaves, Brian Jones, Jeremy Jones, Jake Wyatt and Casey Wyatt; 3 great-granddaughters; 2 stepgreat-grandsons; 3 brothers, Ed (Carol) Wagner of Advance, Tony (Joyce) Wagner of Mocksville and Jeff (Fran) Wagner of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Turrentine Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joe Smith and Fred Carlton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, Nov. 1, at the church.
