The Tigers, who opened with an overtime loss and a less-than-stellar three-point win, regained their swagger at 3-1. Ellis fell to 0-4, while North tumbled to 1-3.
Ray, whose career high was four points coming into the Ellis game, had a night to remember, burning the Jaguars with 10 points in the first quarter and nine in the third. Coach Brent Wall had been waiting for a game like that from Ray, and it all came together for him as South took a 25-16 halftime lead and surged to 46-20 in the third.
“That was the Kentrell we’ve been waiting to see,” Wall said. “He got to the hole, he hit two 3s and he would have had twenty-some if he would have hit his free throws. He had a super game, the type of game we’ve been expecting.”
Redmon and Jones contributed nine points each, while Adam Smith and Johnathan Wiseman added six apiece. Mitchell Miller threw in five. The biggest reason for the blowout was South’s tenacious halfcourt trap.
“We got a lot of easy shots out of that,” he said. “Kentrell is on one of the wings, and Denzel forces them to (Davis Absher’s) side or Kentrell’s side. Kentrell is long. You don’t realize how long he is, and he can get to a lot of passes.”
South outscored Ellis 15-2 in the fourth. Wiseman was the catalyst of that, scoring all six of his points in the final six minutes.
“Wiseman was all over the place,” he said. “Robert Daniel and Devon Parks got after it.”
