The fifth straight win lifted Davie to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Central Piedmont Conference. Quarterback Smith added a chapter to his mind-numbing season, going 14 of 20 for 237 passing yards and two touchdowns. As if that wasn’t enough, he had 60 rushing yards and a TD on 17 keepers. Smith co-starred with receiver Kirklin Bowles (seven catches for 107 yards). Smith also connected with Will Beeson (3-21), Mitchell Miller (2-63), Christian Latham (1-44) and Jae-Re Peebles as Davie piled up 356 yards of offense. Smith started 1 of 5 before catching fire and completing 13 of his next 15. “He started cooking,” coach Todd Bumgarner said. “I’ve said it all along, he’s more than capable of throwing the ball wherever it needs to be thrown. But he surprised me a couple times. He scrambles and makes plays with his legs. If teams blitz him and don’t get him, he’ll get outside the pocket and he’s not just looking to run it.
