As odd as the final score looked on the board and in Saturday morning papers, it looked like a masterpiece to the win-starved Cougars, who are better known for their softball powerhouse. They went 4-7 and missed the playoffs a year ago. It’s a moment folks in Taylorsville will talk about for years.
On the dark side of the field, shock, anger, disappointment and disbelief defined the postgame War Eagles.
“It’s going to surprise a lot of people not in just Taylorsville, but in North Carolina,” Alexander Central’s third-year coach, Tom Harper, said. “People didn’t think this little country town of Taylorsville could come to Davie County and beat them at their place and hold them to nothin’. They had a good game plan, but we came to play and did a great job.”
