Desperate for a win, Mocksville’s Legion baseball team got just what it needed from torrid Jess Cartner in Game Two at Rowan County on the night of Fourth of July. Cartner’s fifth-inning home run lifted Mocksville into the 5-1 lead. But Mocksville sucked the wind out of its own balloon and lost 7-6. An error got Rowan back in the game, another error gave Rowan the lead and Rowan took a 2-0 series lead. While Rowan notched win No. 8 in a row, Mocksville sank to 9-15 with loss No. 7 in a row. “This was really a heartbreaker, not being able to push a couple more runs across and then losing a 5-1 lead,” Mocksville coach Mike Lovelace said. Mocksville starter D.J. Webb surrendered a home run on the game’s first pitch, but he was dynamite the rest of the first, the second, third and the fourth. The score was 1-1 going into the top of the fifth. With two on and two outs, Cartner rode one over the right-field wall, his first homer of the season giving Mocksville the 5-1 cushion.
