Howard Matches Home Run Record

Brent Beam homered twice against Reynolds.
By Brian Pitts - This is getting to be a tired old story for Davie’s varsity baseball team, which is apparently right where it belongs in fifth place in the Central Piedmont Conference. When Davie rolled over visiting Reynolds 12-5, the War Eagles improved to 4-0 against the sixth- and seventh-place teams (South Rowan and Reynolds). When they lost 4-2 Friday at North Davidson, they fell to 1-6 against the top four teams (West Forsyth, East Rowan, North Davidson and Mount Tabor).
An upset win over Zach White and North would have forced a three-way tie for second between Davie, North and Tabor, with four teams ultimately claiming state-playoff berths. Now Davie isn’t going anywhere unless it earns one of five statewide wild cards or wins the CPC Tournament, set for May 3, 4 and 7.
While Davie did little to inspire thoughts of a miraculous run in the tournament, last week’s consolation was senior Zach Howard, who cracked his seventh and eighth home runs to tie Matt Marion’s single-season record.
Howard homered during a 7-1 nonconference win at South Mecklenburg to tie Wes Mecham for second on the list. Mecham clubbed seven in 1989. Howard climbed in the record books the next game, hitting No. 8 during the win over Reynolds.
He took the historical moment in stride.
“I wasn’t even thinking about that,” Howard said. “I didn’t even know I tied it until somebody told me. I’m not even going to worry about (possibly breaking the record). If it happens, it happens.”
Marion set the record for a fabulous ‘89 squad that went 17-5, won the CPC title and reached the 4-A semifinals. Even though Marion has company in the single-season department, he still owns a comfortable lead in career homers, collecting 16 between 1988-90. Howard stands at 11. For the record, Marion still holds the single-season mark for Mocksville Legion homers, cranking 15 in 1990.
Howard, born in October of ‘88, had only been in the world a short while when Marion was trotting around the bases. Marion offered congratulations, then sent a good-natured message with a hearty laugh.
“David will be 5 in May, and he’s going to break (the record),” Marion said of his young boy. “Tell (Howard) ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise Record, P.O. Box 99, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
