Davie led 2-0 before Tabor rallied in the second half. The teams went at it for 100 minutes.
“That’s the best offensive numbers (18-16 shots in Tabor’s favor) that we’ve ever had against them,” 19th-year coach Pete Gustafson said. “It’s the most we’ve ever scored on them, and we had never gone ahead of them 2-0 that I know of. It was just a tremendous effort.”
While Tabor’s record moved to 6-7-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the Central Piedmont Conference, Davie improved to 7-4-1, 1-4-1.
Clare Moser, with an assist from Jessa Ren, and Hannah Stroupe gave Davie the 2-0 lead. Tabor scored five minutes into the second half and with five minutes left in regulation. It was Davie’s second double-OT battle in four games, including a 1-0 loss to North Davidson.
Tabor dominated Davie 5-1 and 7-1 in 2007 and 4-0 and 1-0 last year. But the War Eagles took Tabor to the limit - and beyond. Keeper Kelley Cundiff was superb with 19 saves.
“Their coach told me: ‘I don’t want you to think this was a fluke. Y’all played hard. This was not a fluke,’” Gustafson said.
Gustafson said seniors Cassie Barnes, Ren and Stroupe reenergized the War Eagles during the five-minute break between regulation and overtime.
“The seniors took over the overtime talk,” he said. “I told (assistant coach Polly Reynolds): ‘They’re not saying anything that I wouldn’t say. I would say the same thing.’ Those seniors are really stepping it up as far as leadership. They’re part of the reason we tied.”

The next night, the Spartans came to War Eagle Stadium mad and slapped Davie back to reality.
“They came over with their guns, and they had it,” Gustafson said. “We had awakened a sleeping giant. They played hard, played fast and I told their coach it’s probably the fastest I’ve seen Tabor. We couldn’t keep up with them. The night before we could.”
