- The Davie wrestling team spent more time getting ready for Senior Night than it did on the mat against Reagan, needing only 40 or so minutes to drub the visiting Raiders 72-6 last week.
Davie won 13 of 14 matches, recorded seven of the match’s eight pins and improved to 32-1 overall and 4-0 in the Central Piedmont Conference. It was the first-ever meeting with the Raiders, a first-year member of the CPC.
Davie got pins from Trevon Faulkner (154), Ricky Bell (217), Cole Blankenship (HWT), Ryan Smith (105), Jesse Hilton (114), Michael Waters (121) and Shane Carter (127). Bell made quick work of his opponent in his first action in quite a while. He had been out with a back injury.
Zack Vernon bumped up to 147 and still overwhelmed one of Reagan’s top guys in an 18-2 technical fall. Matt Garretson earned a 12-4 major decision at 162. Toby Lowe won 7-5 at 173. Reagan gave forfeits to Jonathan Hupp (191), Kevin Whitley (132) and Tony Donati (137).
Reagan’s only win came against a seldom-used freshman.
The seniors who were honored were Garretson, Hilton, Hupp, Vernon and Whitley.
“I thought we looked pretty good at times,” coach Buddy Lowery said. “We hit some good things.”
Vernon is now 145-31 for his career, placing him fourth all time in ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, N.C. 28145.

Gadson, Bode Hit Big Shots As South Stuns Ellis At End

South’s Destiny Johnson and Ashton Brown play defense on Ellis’ Ivey Carney.
By Brian Pitts - The South Davie girls basketball team’s game last week at Ellis started like a nightmare, with the Tigers on the business end of a 10-4 score.
The game ended like a dream, with Emeral Gadson hitting a go-ahead 3-pointer, Courtney Bode providing a four-point cushion with a dagger from the left wing and South celebrating an improbable 33-29 win.
It was validation for the Tigers, who were 0-5 in the three-year series after losing the first meeting 38-32. It was one to remember for South because Ellis (8-5) had won seven of eight and Ellis held a 29-20 lead in the fourth.
But South earned a memorable moment behind Gadson (10 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists), Bode (seven second-half points) and Dejah Joyner (six second-half points). Coach Gloria Chalmers’ Tigers improved to 8-5 with their fourth straight win, the longest winning streak since Megan Kellogg’s 2005-06 eighth-grade squad started 9-0. It’s also the most wins for South’s girls since that 2005-06 team finished 12-2.
“The first day of tryouts, it was like: ‘Alright. What are we going to do?’” assistant coach Tim Kenney said. “We’re playing our best ball right now. Gloria has done a fantastic job, and the ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, N.C. 28145.
