Boys Come Away With Split In 4 Games In 4 Days

Jamal Mayfield won lots of respect during CPC play.
By Brian Pitts - The Davie varsity boys basketball team didn’t crack the state playoffs or pull off the big upset to reach the Central Piedmont Conference Tournament finals, but coach Mike Absher was very content with how the season ended.
And why not? Last week the War Eagles played four games in four days, coming away with a 2-2 split. They defeated host Reynolds 57-49. After suffering a disappointing 59-48 loss to visiting North Davidson on Senior Night, they responded with a 47-41 win over North in the first round of the CPC Tournament. Then they pushed top-seeded Reagan before finally running out of steam, 66-53.
Although Davie finished fifth out of six teams in the regular season and 11-15 overall, it did advance in the CPC Tournament for the first time since 2005’s first-round win over North Davidson.

It wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicates. Parkland established a 36-17 lead before forfeiting the final three weight classes.
The loss in the Western Regional final ended the dual-team careers for starters Matt Garretson, Jesse Hilton, Jonathan Hupp, Zack Vernon and Kevin Whitley. At least Davie could take comfort in the fact Parkland crushes everybody.
Davie went 36-2, with both losses to Parkland. The Mustangs went on to clobber Cary 38-14 in the state final, extending its state-record winning streak to 175 and ending a 138-match winning streak for Cary (34-1). The Imps hadn’t lost since the 2006 state championship match at Davie.
Parkland coach Maurice Atwood has a gold mine. His Mustangs rose to prominence with a 46-0 record in 2007, when they won the first of three ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, N.C. 28145.
