On Nov. 6 Davie residents will vote on whether to allow county commissioners to levy a local tax that they say will be used for school construction.
Bill Foust on Monday asked for commissioner’s signatures on a letter of commitment saying they would use the revenue only for school projects.
All five commissioners signed, along with county attorney Bob Price and county manager Terry Bralley.
Foust said some of the residents he’d spoken with in the county were hesitant to vote for any new tax. “A lot of people have said they need a commitment from you commissioners.”
Two items will appear for a yes or no vote on the Nov. ballot - a land transfer tax up to .4% or a local sales tax up to .25%.
Commissioners can enact either tax, with the consent of the voters, but not both.
A resolution also signed by the commissioners said that the board believes it is necessary that alternatives to the traditional property tax be found, and that either of these two alternatives will provide a fair and equitable alternative to the property tax.
The resolution also promised to use the revenue for school construction and debt services. Price told the board any decisions made concerning the revenue would be binding for one fiscal year only, and would have to be re-enacted by future boards ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise Record, P.O.
