GRADES 10-12 AT DAVIE HIGH SCHOOL
Superintendent Taking Proposal To School Board

Superintendent Dr. Robert Landry believes ninth graders need to be nurtured more, and that is why he is recommending to the school board that grades be reorganized, with sixth graders going back to elementary school and ninth graders remaining in middle school.
The move could happen in two years.
“There was a discussion last spring about a ninth grade academy, so we went to Wake Forest-Rolesville and a few other school sites, but we found that the reasons they created ninth grade academies was because of overcrowding. In Wake Forest-Rolesville, they’re landlocked,” he said.
“So, when we started looking at a ninth grade academy, what we came up with was a junior high concept, where you have seventh, eighth and ninth grades, but with the middle school philosophy, which revolves around interdisciplinary teaching and a more nurturing environment, with more contact with the parents, which, ideally, brings you closer to the student.”
Landry said having been principal of all grade levels has given him a good perspective on what students really need, and many Davie parents are products of the type of organization he is proposing.
“When I was a principal at South Davie Junior High, I didn’t see ninth graders going to court. And when I was a principal at North Davie Junior High, we received national recognition, not just state recognition, but national recognition.”
It was about 12 years ago that the middle school philosophy came ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise Record, P.O. Box 99, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
