County Approves Budget; Minus Tax Increase

By Dwight Sparks - By a quick 5-0 vote, Davie County commissioners took a proposed three-cents tax hike out of the 2010-11 budget Monday.
In a 15-minute session, the board took surgical action on the proposed hike that would have paid for a new high school on Farmington Road. That school has been shelved.
Board members welcomed commissioner Ken White back from recent heart surgery. White’s prayer that opened the meeting recalled the nation’s beginning at the Fourth of July in 1776, noting that the nation was “forged on the anvil” of conflict before peace came to the new nation.
He prayed for an end to conflict in Davie and the peaceful resolution to the county’s trouble.
Only one resident, James Cowles of Clayton Drive, spoke at a public hearing on the budget, asking questions about various items.
About 30 people watched the board ax the tax hike.
