Bakery Could Add 75 Jobs At New Mocksville Location

- Salem Bakery, a division of Dewey’s Bakery, plans to begin construction next month on a new baking facility off US 601 in Mocksville.
The 50,000 square foot facility will employ approximately 75 people and represents an investment of $6 million.
Mocksville Town Manager Christine Sanders said she is excited about the facility creating new jobs and an investment here, and praised the mayor and town board for getting grants to encourage economic development.
“Our business has been growing steadily, and we believe there is potential for significant growth in the future,” said company chief executive officer, Scott Livengood. “Our current location on Indiana Avenue in Winston-Salem has served us well, but we have simply outgrown the space and it makes sense to build a new, modern facility that will accommodate our growth plans.”
Dewey’s Bakery, founded in 1930, created its Salem Baking division in 1992 to focus on traditional baked products that had potential for national distribution. Starting with Moravian Cookies, the company’s product line has grown to include Classic Southern Style Cheese Straws, Cheese Straw Petites, Savory Cheese Biscuits and Classic Shortbread Cookies.
“We are very excited to have a company of Salem Baking and Dewey’s stature come to our community,” said Terry Bralley, chair of the Davie County Economic Development Commission. “They are an institution in this area, and we are extremely proud to be a part of their plan for future growth.”
Calloway Johnson Moore & West is the architectural firm for the new complex, which will be built off US 601 North from a new road built across from Country Lane. John S. Clark Company has been retained to build the facility.
Salem Baking products are sold in many specialty food and gourmet stores, primarily in the United States. The company’s international business is in the early stages, Livengood said.
All Salem Baking products will be made at the new facility, which will include a retail outlet that will feature Dewey’s favorites such as Moravian Sugar Cake. To learn more, visit www.salembaking.com ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise Record, P.O. Box 99, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
