Voters To Decide On Possible New Taxes
By Jackie Seabolt
-
County commissioners unanimously approved two resolutions to put possible tax increases to a vote this November.
The resolutions call for a vote by the people on either imposing a land transfer tax up to .4% or a local sales tax up to .25%.
The resolutions state that the proceeds will be used solely for the capital improvements to Davie schools.
Both items will appear on the Nov. 6 municipal election ballot. If approved, county commissioners would have the authority to levy one of the taxes - but not both.
During the public comments portion of the special meeting held on Tuesday, Bill Hall told commissioners that he supported the land transfer tax.
“This is something that I think that both sides can come together on. I don’t think the land transfer tax would hurt the sale of land whatsoever. We’ve got to have more money, there’s no question about it. I feel like this is an opportunity for everybody that voted yes and no in both previous elections to come together for something that would be beneficial to the development of Davie County.”
The land transfer tax would be paid by the seller of property ... subscribe to the Davie County Enterprise Record, P.O. Box 99, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
